Welcome to The BX Project

Often referred to as the BX 'Pub', the BXProject is one of the oldest UK websites dedicated to the Citroen BX and has been around for over 10 years. These days it's here to share my 'Project' experiences and gain some emotional support in the Forum. Find out more about the BXProject HERE

CCC - East Mids - 'X' Rally

This past weekend (15th of April) witnessed the 'Trial by Fire' of Jaz as she travelled 120miles to and from the CitroenCarClub - East Midlands - 'X' Rally at Burghley House near Stamford.

The journey was relatively uneventful, save for the steering wheel not being on quite straight, which led to a few interesting moments post round about.

The event was a huge success both in terms of total attendance and what seemed like a record 26 BX's making it all the way there. I also got to put a few faces to names from the BXClub, which is always nice, and after a bit of a natter with far too few, I'm really looking forward to the ICCCR2012 in August.

Cracking up under old age

After a long time searching for a mysterious clunk on very sharp braking or sudden acceleration, I've finally found the problem!

I'd pretty much given up all hope having changed the ball joint twice, the hub and carrier, the drive shaft and the drop links on the offending side. Someone had suggested that try changing the main engine mount. So i bought one in, and went to change it. On discovering how much of a PITA it would be, i also found the actual cause of the 'clunk';

I didn't have chance to change it before the MOT, but was relieved to find that the examiner was in agreement and hadn't penalised me too heavily for it!

A trip to Citroen Coventry to find it was an un-obtainable part, was quickly followed by a visit to the local suppliers. At £15 a set I didn't bother and set about an eBay hunt. I managed to find some Peugeot 205 buffers for £5 each, when I remembered that Stuart at BakerBM had Grp-N buffers listed on his site. A few days later a set of buffers arrived for £5 each (plus the postage of course).

Well they certainly look the part, however the 205 parts don't fit directly into the BX and needed a bit of modification to get them onto the car. Two 5.5mm holes through the body to be precise, quick and easy!

She Lives!

After almost 3 years to the day, the car has finally rolled out of the garage, almost on all four wheels.

The future is bright, and after a few days of tinkering she's not far off ready for the MOT.

Even the ABS works for the first time in a lot of years!

Heater Tap Disection

As part of a concerted effort to get the BX back on the road, the weekend saw not one but three heater taps dismembered! Ultimately it was quite easy to rebuild, but the faults where caused by a build up of RadWeld /KSeal.

Explosive rust removal!

Well, potentially explosive, if i had a huge amount of rust to remove and a long time to do it! This is rust removal by reverse electrolysis, a self regulating method of removing rust from metal without doing any damage to the work piece. In this case the workpiece is a headlight adjustment screw which is very heavily corroded to the point I'm struggling to start a tap on it to revive the threads.

Reverse electrolysis

I recently read about this 'magic' method for removing rust which is almost as old as electricity its self. By applying a current through the work piece in a weak alkali bath, reverse rusting occurs and the iron oxide literally falls off. At the same time hydrogen is produced in very fine very small bubbles and hence the potential for explosion.

This is my first test with the method and thus far it seems to be working bloody marvelously! I'll get a finished picture once its clean.

RetroRides - Fantastic article for older car owners

Retro Rides isn't a new forum, nor have I only just discovered it, but i recently sat and read one of THE most useful threads to an older car owner. The thread is concerned primarily with panel beating repair patches for welding into place, using basic tools and practices. The article takes a really sensible approach to tackling complicated shapes and makes the whole experience seem achievable by any mortal! Check it out yourself over on Retro Rides Forum;

Quick Fix - LHM Leaks

On the front of the sub frame is a t-piece union that joins two little thin semi opaque leak of pipes that come from the front N/S suspension and the security valve which often fails. The failure is usually evident in LHM running off the back of the subfrme on the pasenger side.

The recommended  Citroen repair is to join the suspension and return line together using washer bottle piping, and then run a second return line from the security valve to the reservoir using NEW washer bottle hose from a motor factors. It is also now possible to buy silicone hose of the right diameter which will far outlast the washer pipe.

BXProject at the CCC National Rally

Heritage Centre

This year, as in previous the BXProject will be attending the Citroen Car Club's National Rally held this year at the Gaydon Motor Heritage centre. The Heritage centre will make a fantastic background for the biggest annual Citroen car owner meet in the UK. I'm looking forward to it, and I'd invite anyone with an interest in Citroen's or Classic cars in general to visit the Rally over the weekend. More information can be found on the Citroen Car Club website here;

Front end restoration - continues

Well progress is a little slow. Busy weekends, cold weather and a lack of service from Royal Snail have created some hold ups. All told a lot more metal is now missing, and some new panels have been fabricated!

Old metal out;

Front end restoration

In order to put the AC onto the car, it seems sensible to tackle as many jobs as possible before the expense of gassing up.One problem I know needs tackling is the usual rusted out inner wing, i thought before the start of the Brazilian GP i would take the front end apart and see whats what.

Well its mixed, not as bad as it could have been but worse than i had hoped;
