Who knows about Landies?
Specifically the transmission - it's permanent 4wd with 2 axle diffs and one centre diff between the 2 axles (which can be locked meaning that at least one wheel on each axle must turn).
I was removing a wheel today and jacked it up before cracking the wheel nuts, only to find that the wheel was prevented from rotating by something. The centre diff was not locked and the gearbox was in neutral, so surely one wheel should have been able to rotate??? I'm wondering whether it has some kind of LSD fitted, I vaguely remember that the Torsen type 'lock up' with a worm gear winding up. That would explain why traction seems excellent - we've even been towing a heavily loaded trailer in the snow and had no problems.

erm, rear wheel, automatic, can't say i'm surprised. try taking the prop out and see what it does, i bet you'll get something more 'normal'

But gearbox in neutral - or does that not matter with an auto? I can't be arsed to take the prop out, I believe you! More a question of why I suppose.

Re: Who knows about Landies?
Is it a Torsen 2 or 3? the 3 is relatively conventional with one way clutches and planetary set up, but shouldn't lock unless your auto is in park.
The 2 is a parallel gear design with no planets or clutches, it has some patented name I can't remember. but I would have to go and look at the system again to check whether it locks automatically in given circumstances. Can't see it doing though as it is a torque bias ratio system where both axles and all wheels still turn but the torque is directed to at least one wheel each axle. I had a Quattro apart some time ago and I think Pug use these too.

erm, is it actually in neutral? they have a tendancy to stick. but still i thought the prop controls the outlets from the rear diff, so iv you have two pieces locked (one side and the prop) then the third wont turn.

Re: Who knows about Landies?
/\ what he said. If it's permenant 4 wheel drive then you's need at least 2 off the deck for one to rotate against the other.

Re: Who knows about Landies?
There are definite parallels to draw between the 2 though

What, they both leak when they're fucked?
Still don't get it, sorry I've had the old one with one wheel off the ground and it span without any other wheels rotating - had to lock the centre diff to move forwards. Unless the autobox means I can't drive the transmission from the wheel? Not a big deal, I'll try and get one rear wheel off the ground and see what happens...

Autoboxes have no mechanical link from engine to output shaft though.
If the oil pumps not rotating in the box, then nothing much would happen!
