Valver Engine Mods
With plans fully underway to get the Valver down here for a winter "Project Re-start", I want to start buying parts for the only area I haven't really: The engine!
Didn't buy much as the final plan for it was never clear.
So, i'd like opinions where £1000 would be best spent.
Bear in mind that whatever i do to it should be the foundations for later improvements.
I'd like to try and gain as much reliable power/torque as possible.
It's a good solid engine with no mechanical issues and (not included in that budget) will be standard servicing.
Obviously there's hundreds of mod options, which is why i'm asking for opinions. All i have bought (as far as i recall) is PugSport oil pump spring and uprated chain & sprocket, magnecor leads and the nitrous kit (which will definitely be going on).
Ideally they should be mods/parts i can do myself. No-one mention TB's, they're not an option!
So, fire away (with linky's to products if you have any).
Cheers!

Re: Valver Engine Mods
Wouldn't have bothered with the pugsport oil pump spring. A complete pump or the relief valve from an XUD11 would have done the same thing!
Baffled sump is a must.
uprated bigend bolts is a good idea.
Depends how mad you want to go really dude.
Personally I find a No.1 inlet cam and a No.3 exhaust cam gives exceptional torque at the bottom end with little loss of top end power. Mine still bounces happily off the rev limiter in 5th without using full throttle.
replace the standard TB with a 42 or 45 (I forget how big the uprated one is, but they can be found, Kitch had one).
Other than that, I wouldn't touch it. Go ape shit crazy for power and you'll loose reliability.
All this assumes you are keeping the D6C rather than going the DFW route??

Re: Valver Engine Mods
It will indeed be the D6C, i've given up with the DFW avenue!
I wasn't aware of the pump swap option when i bought all my parts 5 years ago, b ut now i have the new ones still sat in boxes, might as well use them.
Oil control is definitely up there on the priorities list, but until i get the sump off to see if the elusive Windage tray is actually fitted (as was suggested by the seller 10 years ago) i'll hold off with the purchasing.
The cams sound an interesting prospect, got to be easier than re-grinds if i can find any! Do you reckon there's any gain to be had from a pair of Verniers?
Cheers!

Re: Valver Engine Mods
Many rave of the verniers, but to be honest, unless you want all the power right at the top with little usable torque I wouldn't bother.
*might* br able to help with cams, will have to look on the scrap engine, I cant remember what it had..

Re: Valver Engine Mods
oil surge is what kills D6C's. Hence you MUST have a baffled and flapped sump if you want to give it the beans round twisty shit.

Re: Valver Engine Mods
Any suggestions on options for the baffle sump/windage tray? I seem to recall the bottom of a 12v XUD has it all built in, including the take offs for the AC compressor? I need one. Soon!

Re: Valver Engine Mods
12v that is XUD11, 2,1l diesels? Does it fit valver, other XUDs?

Re: Valver Engine Mods
Seems like its an XU10 sump

And i'm sure the windage tray needs modifying because of the dipstick tube?

/\ yarp.
By far the easiest way is to ally weld a baffle across the sump with a flap in it.

Re: Valver Engine Mods
I'm thinking perhaps a separate tank under the bonnet and dry sump it.???

Re: Valver Engine Mods
could do, but why? The sump itself is fine, it just needs a baffle plate with a flap to sotp the oil running away fromt he pickup when you give it large in the bends!

Re: Valver Engine Mods
And the problem is actually the fact that the oil doesn't return fast enough because the oil galleries are too small, so i suspect forcing all the oil to the top continually wouldn't be good.

Re: Valver Engine Mods
You could fit a Contella sump baffle which is a good start but I'm not convinced it controls the oil as well as Tanked sump with twin trap doors and reliefs would, you'd have to use a tin sump from a 205gti to make that work too. The ultimate solution to the oil surge issue is to fit an oil accumulator, as seen on my Rotrex'd Mi16 and it works faultlessly, you can plumb it directly into the main gallery via the main oil pressure switch too. You'll never need worry about oil pressure again.
