Cold starting
My car starts well normally, but now it's brass monkey weather,it's starting to be a right bastard.Could the glow plugs be FUBARed.If so,how do I test them. What else could cause starting problems?I run a bit of veggie oil(6 litres to 20 litres of diesel),could this contribute to the problem?

check resistance to ground from each glow plug terminal individually (ie NOT linked together) likely hood is if your asking there goosed, go buy some BERU ones and save any more problems!
veggie oil wont help, but shouldn't make much difference, what will though is a veggie clogged fuel filter, infact that could well be the source of all your faults!

Hi Dean ..........My sheddy old BX was a bsatard to start when I first got it. I removed the 'plugs one by one and tested them with a jump lead & battery .........I found one was not getting as hot as the rest so I replaced all four.
Further poor starting probs were traced to a small white plug in the fuel filter housing,it was leaking air in .........I bodged that with a smear of bath sealant...although [silly as it may sound] the problem was always worse if the tank was nearly empty and it seemed worse if I left the car facing uphill outside my house ....... I also found that pumping the primer bulb helped.
Call down one o' days this [or next] week [not thursday though] and Ah'll gi' thi 'and ter check 'em

I've reached the same conclusion in life as my dog ....if I cant eat it,drink it,hump it or fight it ........I'll just piss on it,and walk away.

I run a blend of SVO at the moment too, and I have to say starting has become a bit of a smokey clattery affair. It's definitely the veg, as if I start on straight diesel it's a fair bit better. I think one or two of the plugs are a bit ill, but they can't be that bad if it starts well on Diesel.
Just one of the things you have to live with if you try cold starting on a blend of Diesel/SVO. Running the plugs for longer does help in my case.
What would be even better would be a twin-tank system with heated lines etc.

... all landings are in fact controlled crashes, and any crash you can walk away from is a good landing. The definition of a good pilot is a man with the same number of landings as take-offs.

Batteries don't like the cold when they're old mate....I bet the veggie oil gets a bit 'stiff' in the cold? As for glow plugs, I've given up testing them and just replace the 4 once i suspect one is gone. Clean up the contacts on the cable as well...
....There he goes, one of God's own prototypes, a high powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production......too weird too live.....and too rare to die

Batteries about 2 years old and a big fat heavy duty one(thank fuck,or I'd be pushing the bloody thing )Got a funny feeling that it's the glow plugs as it was a bastard to start at work this afternoon.I've got a new fuel filter to throw in anyway
Evening news is where they begin with 'Good evening', and then proceed to tell you why it isn't
