Fuck fucketty fuck fuck fuck....................
I took the TZD to the garage for it's MOT yesterday.......except I turned around and cancelled it :( Horrible horrible noise from the front n/s!.

When I was doing the car, I decided (in Bandit wisdom) to replace the front w/bearing cos it sounded iffy....sort of do I/don't I kinda thing. I prob made things worse when I heated up the hub carrier to remove the lower ball joint. Anyway, I must of mullered the new bearing

I'll fit a new one next week and take her in for MOT. I still have some non MOT related stuff to do but all in all I'm quite pleased. I did an awfull bit of welding on the sill repair....just fucking horrible in places but atleast it's hidden behind the plastic wheel arch thingy!

Driving it put me back in BX floatiness! I'd got so used to the valver that at first it felt really odd. Only having 4000 rpm to play with was a bit of a shock too!!!! The differences between 'same models' is interesting too...i.e. My TD (when it was a roto diesel) used to have very little below 2000 rpm and then womf, the turbo kicked in and tailed off as the revs climbed. The TZD has more progressive torque with the turbo kicking in around the 3000....that'll be spot on for the motorway :P

Sadly, the valver is now off the road and I miss it already. We'll run the TZD and the xanty until I've repaired my old TD but for the time being, I don't want to touch a nut, bolt, peice of tin, grinder, welder, grease, green blood or anything car related....once the tzd is mot'd...I am officially a man of liesure..............until I get bored

How the fudge can I repair this...fairly easy to weld a patch but how to seal it and paint it tother side...cos the subframe isi n the way :? :?
Image

I also got round to re-spraying the o/s sill with some black stone chip after some minor de-rustification and priming...looks nice I think. Hopefully I'll do the other side over the weekend... The body work needs a good polish to match tho'!

:D :D Elementary my dear Watson.....Either, lower subframe, a bit, ........ Weld on patch....paint oposite side...re set subframe.

OR................ Get a piece of copper bar..25 x 6...small enuff to post through the hole. (you`ll have to drill a small hole in the middle of it first )
put a welding rod through the hole and bend the end over.
Now work the bar through your hole  and pull it up tight behind it
Now fill the hole with weld removing the welding rod when you get near to it and the copper will drop away. Fill in the last bit and then spray waxoil
behind when it`s cooled.
Disc the weld and then paint it :P

Simple for a welder of your technical capabilities 8) 8) 8)

Now XBX And into HDI.....as well as other ...err.... things.

It's really not at all difficult to drop the subframe mate, especially if you leave the rear mounts on and just drop the front mounts a bit..

Not into dwarfs dude...or amps for that matter....just thought it would be exciting to find something more feminine and sexual than rust.....

Anyhoo, this copper bar thing......hmmmm...............

So, the idea is to use the copper as a 'platform' and chill the weld in place...but not bond it...........right?????.....or wrong.....

Damn thing.............had a small patch of rust on the sill.....but it's always bigger that you expect..............it's like the never ending brow of a hill!!! Have cut replacement part from soon to be cubed TGD  and will will try to weld forthwith.....

Get yourself a 1993 Dennis Lance mate.
Then and only then will you know what RUST is all about!

I bet my pension the weight of the rust in that thing is about 5 times what a complete BX weighs!

Haha! Not going there mate, not on your nelly! I take it they rust 'a bit' then!!! When I was working for Geesink I was never that impressed with the Dennis chassis TBH, the Volvos/Scanias however were great trucks!
Each time we had a chassis in, we had to give it the once over, make sure it was ok etc. Occasionally, we got 2nd hand chassis in - the body had been de-mounted and we had to put a new one on. Anyway, one of the tests was to check goverened revs of the engine. This particular chassis was to be remounted with a new body......so I did the checks and remember thinking 'this cab is shoite, and the engine revs rough as shoite too....' The whole thing was wobbling!! When I stepped out the cab, there were plumes of white smoke every where....stinking white smoke. As it turns out, I'd checked max engine revs with the fucker in gear!!!!!!!!!!!! Effectively, I'd done a motorbike style donut without actually doing the circle  How stoopid was that????? Good fun though :P

BTW, yeah, Father Ted dying was tragic, he just upped and popped his clogs didn't he? One of those 'fit as a fiddle till you die suddenly' type fellas.... :(

Understatement of the century mate!
It's still better than a Ovlov or Scanny unit though.
Yes the Dennis was poorly designed, built to a price and assembled by gimps, but I love them! They be the bestest buses of EVAH. Or at least it will be when I've finished it and modified it so it actually stays together!

Yes old Dermot did rather go from Healthy (ish) chap to dead in recoed time, shame since the unmade series of Father Ted looked to be fucking brilliant from the scripting...

As for the car, seriousley mate, just drop the front end of the subframe, it's only four 16mm nuts, stick a jack under the beam and lower it just enough. Go ape with the paint then bolt it back up.

Infact, if you want a hand one weekend, give us a shout!

Oh mate, I didn't mean to imply that the Lance/all Dennis' were crap! As far as 'dust carts' are concerned, Dennis were the only manufacturer to make a specific chassis for that particular application. Although we had Mercs/Scanias/Volvos as well, they were not only used as dust carts, but a host of other municipal type applications as well. Seddons were the worst (made in Spain for fucks sake.......they even came with an emergency siesta in the glove box!!!!!!!!!!). Buses no doubt are built completely differently quality wise.
Am glad you got it in the end, cos it sounded iffy as regards it's fate from one of your posts about it....

It's fate was rather iffy for a while, happily Matthew smoothed the waters and it all came good.

The Dennis dustcart is also an early stp entrance Dennis Dart as it goes.
The chassis was turned round (ie the front of the dustcart became the back of the bus), and the Lance chassis is a Dennis Fire engine with a modular frame welded on the back to take the power assemblies and the such.

It's the downfall but also the greatness of Dennis, it's all fucking gigantic mechano pieces!

Ok, well in short there's enough give in the pipes to drop it sufficiently without worrying about damaging them.
However, make sure they aint rotted to fuck (if they are I'l dap over and repipe it in Kunifer if you want) and also check the bracket thats actually bolted to the N/S front rear subframe mount, all the pipes run through this, although it's a poxy metal plate that usually corrodes away within 15 minutes so may not be attached anymore.
Just be gentle and keep an eye on things as it drops.

Right, thanks buddy. I didn't have a too much of a look cos I got side tracked as the photos show..However, 'that plate that lasts 15mins' looks fooked, but it'll have to last (at least I hope it will)I shall attempt dropping the subby this weekend, hopefully after I've finished the sill repair as below....

Image

Image

I have a patch cut from the TGD to fit, but I'm a bit concerned about the rust inside the sill as shown below...

Image

This patch is where there is an indent to allow access to the rear subby mounts, but I can't figure the original construction and suss out the extent of this rust. I'm hoping that where this rust patch is, that there are two skins, one with the indent and another with a 'flared relief' (cor....look at the flared relief on her.....  ) which has gone 'a bit rusty'. If I'm wrong with the above, then I assume the rust is more/worse......anyone rekon this needs urgent attention.....
