Turbo to non-turbo?

Post by Madcav » 24 Nov 2008

Dear people who know about things,

I are wanting to make my recovery truck go faster so I see this on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MERCEDES-711D-611 ... 240%3A1318 now I do believe the engine this was fitted to was a 4.0 diesel and as mine is a 4.0 diesel, albeit an n/a one, a) will this fit and b) will I have to beef up the internals or risk blowing my pistons and shit to bits?
Ta muchly,

Mick Anical-Simpleton,
Cheshire.

I wouldn't do it. Turbo engines are much much more than just non-turbo engines with a turbo strapped to them. Items that will be stronger are:

Block, Crank, Rods, Valves.

Fundamental differences include:

Cam timing, Injectors, Injection pump, compression ratio, piston cooling oil jets.

Strap a turbo to a non-turbo engine and you'll kill it very quickly.

/\ what he said.
Although the 4 litre turno and non turno engines look almost identical they share next to no interchangable bits.
Well, actually, you can use turbo pistons, crank, rods, head etc on a N/A but not vice versa.
Have to say whilst not the most rapid things ever I always rather liked the 4litre N/A Merc lump. Simple to work on and huge torque at fuck all revs.

That said, if you want a turbo lump I'll keep an eye out at work, they've been busy scrapping Merc's all over the group, and some Merc bits are turning up. Since we have a few Turbo'd buses in the group one may turn up..

To be quite honest Billy, I've driven a 709D, and an 811D (turbo) and even an older model 814D (turbo, intercooler) and you know what? The difference in performance is so small, you can hardly notice the difference.
I think if your truck is feeling tired, then to give it a new lease of life could be as easy as putting a recon set of fuel injectors, and setting up the fuel pump properly.
I'm serious Billy, when I worked at annother bus company, we had an old 811, which was FUCKED, when it could no longer pull a lazy man out of bed, my boss bought a set of injectors, and a recon fuel pump, and instantly it was transformed.

Thanks lads. Doc if a turbo lump does come up please could you let me know?
Mine still goes reasonably well but not as good as it was. I did wonder if that was related to the exhaust (bought one that was the wrong part but it was fitted to get it on the road) and it could very likely do with a service of some description to the injectors etc.
Incidentally could still do with a decent bonnet (609/709/811/Vario) and two decent standard height chassis cab doors if anybody spots any on their travels. There is a Merc breakers in Manchester (Dronsfields) but they're incredibly, stupidly expensive

Mind you I also had a dream that I'd missed a large section of inner wheel arch off the TZD so that you could see the wheel moving up and down as you drove it!!!!
My other dream was dirty and for once actually about the missus      8)
