Hiya Charlie.

Where the adjuster is at the front, you have a short piece of 1/4" steel bar between the clutch arm and the adjusting screw. Cut a new one about 8mm longer, making sure the ends are cut square and replace it. What`s happened is the cable has stretched and the extra 1/4" or so gives you all (or most)
of your adjustment back 8)

Don`t throw the original away as you will need it anytime you go to a new cable....which as David will tell you... you don`t really want to do till you have to :P

Grr.

Be sure that you've not got the beginnings of the clutch release bearing breaking though the pressure plate fingers. If this is happening, you'll lose the clutch without warning, so get it changed before it leaves you stranded.

From new clutch and cable the cable stretches 1/2 an inch, with a good 4mm left on the plate,( this from personal checking) A cit mechanic showed me the dodge. If the movement is smooth with no noise it`s 99% the cable.

But if you want to do it, :) change em both at the same time

I had this a while back on the diesel, when it had the n/a engine / box.
Adjusted the clutch and about 2 days later there'd be no adjustment again and the thing was dragging..

In my case it was the pedal box breaking up..

hmmm

i thought it was only the early bxs that suffered from box failure but will check that first

is there any other symptoms of the clutch bearings going??? as bandit mentioned this to me as well, but i know he just wants to see me change the clutch so he can get all superior like with his fat finger wagging

cheers lads

All bx's suffer from thefailing box

The give away that bearings failed is no gears!
Usually as they fail they start to whine a little, when mine finally went through the fingers and made a lovely mess it had been whining for at least a month.

I phink Charlie was talking about the pedal box not the gearbox. I thought it was the early bxs that suffered pedal box failure on the clutch pedal, but facelift models had a revised p/box which fractured where the throttle pedal pivots.

All BX pedal boxes are the same AFAIK, certainly every pedal box I've ever seen has been the same.
they dont just fail around the throttle, but also where the clutch cable clips into the pedal box.
Tis mighty thin around there, and the box is made of crapite, so they flex a bit, then they crack, then the cable fucks off through the pedal box...

AFAIK there is a very slight difference between pedal boxes destined for different models. Certainly the 16/19 petrol pedal box is not identical to the TD pedal box, as the clutch cable comes out at a different angle.

They are the flimsiest pedal box I've ever seen though. I've also welded various bits into my pedal box in the hope that it doesn't fall to pieces.

Ah, cheeseium!

Now thats interesting David!
I've fitted pedal boxes from petrol's into diesels and vice versa before and never noticed the difference!
the pedal box in the valver is from a diesel, maybe thats why it was an utter arse to get the bastard cable in!
