How to wire a BX window motor for Race Purposes (for JayW)

Post by Vanny » 06 Aug 2009

Bit of a random one this, a friend of mine who i building a BX racer asked about how to wire the window winder with the most simple scheme.

I hope this is simple enough, i can explain in detail if you want, same thing will work for both sides. You can earth locally, so you only need to take two wires to the passenger door. It is possible to add a second switch in line so that you have a passenger and driver switch for the passenger window.

Add a fuse, probably 30amp for both windows (run through the same fuse). Relay is only there to stop windows being wound down with the ignition off. Personally i would have a master breaking switch to kill everything but the alarm, so then it wouldn't matter.

Ay Up Lads!

I will indeed, most definitely be at Stratford! Bringing the missus too so she can moan about mans obsession with rusty old motors... :)

Thanks for the diagram Vanny, very simple now you've explained it and i'm glad i can use the standard switches!

Looking forward to Q2 when you've got the time, no hurry tho, i'm way premature on that one :)

No wucking furries m8, there's no rush!

Incidently, as you mentioned above I already bought a master breaker for the power, will cut everything but the alarm & stereo memory.

Gonna run the power for the windows from the original supply in the fusebox so they operate as normal just without eleventy-million feet of wire!

Enjoy the beer!!

make sure you put the feeds to the alarm and radio on diodes, including the ignition fed for the radio. You'll probably need diodes in the circuit for central locking, indicators and horn when hooking up the alarm, otherwise you end up with the whole car wired through the alarm unit. Makes for a really fast blowing fuse the first time you operate something electrical without the master on (like press the brake lights, or a window button).

Vanny, can you do a diagram how to wire up the 1 touch window for the passenger side? I have the box already in there, and the wiring loom that goes with it, but if I fit it at the moment, then I can't operate the passenger window from the drivers side......

As i've just woken up and my eyes took quite some time to connect to my brain i just spent 5 minutes typing that you'd need to stuff anoter relay box in the passenger door for it to work..... then i re-read what smiffy wrote :?

I've taken rather a dislike now to the BX wiring, after removing about 3 miles of cable from the damn thing... green wire, brown wire, green wire, brown wire, green wire, brown wire, green wire, brown wire, OH WOW a yellow wire! Even more WOW, a blue wire!

I should be ok for beer, me and the missus work in an offy :)

You are god!

On the wire front, you do realise that some times the yellow are +ve and some times they are -ve, and the blue wires sometimes are -ve and sometimes are +ve?

Actually, the wiring in the BX is pretty clever for Italian wiring! Once you figure it out, you can pick up any connector, look at the wires, and the connector colour and imediately work it all out!

Smiffy, its not just two extra wires, you have to move wires around in the multiplugs, if you dont then when you turn the ignition on the fuse goes ____ well it doesn't make much noise but it fails!

I'll do you a drawing when i get back from the festival.

You're a strange one..... Since when did anyone like Italian electrics? My other main car is a Panda 100hp (and even though it was built in Poland) is testament to the old assumption that all Italians must be colourblind when it comes to wires!

In all fairness, theres not a lot of the original loom left now, aside of the engine management, all i've got left is the cabling for the dash gauges & switches (although i've removed a few unnessecary ones like front fog, rear demister & wiper), the rear light circuit and the ABS (which is on a switch so i can turn it off when required).
