16v top end grunt lacking

I noticed today and sort of confirmed it to myself today that the 16v is hesitating above 5000rpm and there certainly isn't the surge at 4500. Below that in the rev range all is normal. Could it be a sign of a 'tired' coil or would that show itself throughout the full rev range?

More likely that your injectors need servicing/cleaning.

Not really that bad, from the other side there was an online service shown which used the professsional ASNU test & cleaning equipment that Lucas used to use. You can send them your injectors by post and they perform the service and send 'em back. :D Think cost was about £60 for the 4.

(I preferred taking mine down the road to Lucas but that's not an option any more but cost was similar.)

Does the K light come on if given beans still?
I'd start with plugs (they dont live long on valvers) then coil. Although if you're changing the coil I'd change the ign. amp at the same time.

Plugs are less than 10,000 miles, the leads were decent hand-me-downs from Doc. The coil and (amp? where be that) have been on the car since I bought it - probably old and tired.

Good point Doc, the K light doesn't come on. Is it a sign of fuel starvation, as in tired pump not keeping up with high rev demands?

Another thing I forgot to mention, the rev counter has been slacking off, as if the connection or pick up is becoming intermittent, but the ECU doesn't use that pickup..........does it?

my moneys on the dizzy.
Hamplifier is screwed onto an alloy plate on the firewall.

Its uncommon for all four injectors to fail, at the same time, and if one had gone it would be lumpy not hesitant.

I concur there Vanny, it defo sounds more more trickery than fuelly. Fuelly would bring up other symptoms.

IS the amp on an ally plate on the fire wall? Ideally I need it to last until June before I need spend cash on it. The clutch is about to shit itself - put the foot down and it tends to slip unless gradual with the right foot.

/\ Why is that mate? Where is the rev counter pick up? Will this get progressively worse or just die?

The rev counter takes a pulse fromt he coil. Erm, pin 3 I think? I dunno now, it's early, or late, or whatebver, either way I'm tired..

But yeah, I've found oin the past once the rev counter starts dicking around the coil usually shits the bed shortly after.
Is it worse when it's warmned up?

Dunno tbh as I don't punt it when cold, although thinking about it the rev counter is more or less well behaved when cold, but does get more arsey as it warms! Top diagnosis dude!
