Playing with whurlygigs ..........

To my surprise, the Garrett turbo (GT15) that came off the Xanty 2.1 has a smaller A/R than the BX (T0234) so I was hoping to fit the Xanty one to reduce that dreaded lag.

But, the air in and out ports are all arse about face compared to the BX setup.
Then I thought about swapping internals only the spindles are different sizes.

So now it's case of keeping the central part (CHRA or whatever it's called) of the GT15 complete with spindle/turbine/compressor but use the turbine and compressor housings off the T0234

Judging by the turbine housing, it's a bolt on swap job but the GT15 turbine is slightly smaller, resulting in a greater clearance between it and it's housing. How critical is this clearance?

The other option I guess is to use a front mounted i/c and use the T15 as is but I'm sort of reluctant to do that

Very.

Don't bugger about with it! Either change the turbo complete, or leave it alone!

I think what he meant ^^^ is...

The extra space between the impeller & housing will cause the air to just spin around (or straight past it) instaed of blowing/sucking.... oooooh, more tea vicar!

That told me then!  Actually if I can't change the turbine housing I can't use the thing unless I make some sort of adapter plate which just sounds horrible!

Ah well, I'm back to the big elastic band then :x

  You could stick the elastic band round the edge to get rid of the gap.

It has to be a specific gap Bandito, which depends on, well....a lot of things really but it involves some maths and the outside dia and the pitch or depth of the blades/ vanes, coupled with the volume of air being shoved in.
Too big and you get little pressure developing.
Too small and a vacuum develops by the speed of the passing vanes, slowing it by the drag that ensues.

Picky picky! If it helps I'll mount the turbo in a vertical plane then. Happy now?

David, if your trying to keyboard warrior my use of the english language then your failing on two counts, firstly i draw the 'I'm an american, and this in my country this bastardisation of the english language is acceptable, secondly you should better spend your time finding some one who gives a whurlygig!
