Soundproofing

Post by mnde » 22 Jul 2010

My BX ain't got any soundproofing under the bonnet (i.e. on the wire mesh thing). Has anyone dabbled with replacing their missing/falling off soundproofing stuff and what did you use? Jay commented that he could hear a lot of my engine noise and top end rattle, more than expected, and it's been one of these jobs I've never found the time to get round to. The doors have got quite weighty soundproofing in them (swapped from the old BX) and they therefore don't clang like BX doors normally do... but yeah, the engine could do with some quietening stuff over the top of it.

Yeah I know I could turn up the radio :P

Many years ago I made a soundproof room using old egg trays and carpet glued to the wall and ceiling.
I appreciate this is feck all use to you but I just had this mad idea of sticking old foam and eggboxes under the bonnet.

I did once soundproof a fiesta with some horsehairy felt like stuff held in place with vicious black glue, it lasted the life of the car and was very effective.

The Diesel ones are 1/2" thick felt between two plasticky sheets, pressed to shape.

Just might have a spare left at D's garage but I think I already gave it away.
I'll have a look and throw it in the back tomorrow, if it's there.

I'm setting off for Farnborough at 6 am

I'm pretty darn sure I have something suitable from an N/A diesel in stock you're welcome to Mark, along with the little bastard twatty clips that hold it all to the bonnet..

:) I had given it away actually.

I used to have a steel bonnet on my TXD but that stupid woman bent the corner and the stupider garage fitted the wrong bonnet. Without soundproofing or grille (they were in the boot) I kid you not. This was an insurance recommended body shop and they didn't fit them because they didn't know how to fasten the soundproofing and they couldn't fit the grill because they had fitted the long nose bonnet. Utter wankers!! In fact they weren't that good.

I've writ about Friday elsewhere on here. Fantastic day. :D :D

There were huge differences between the Xantia and BX soundproofing and the Xantia was a much quieter car.

Road noise was quieter but engine noise was reduced more so. There was much more and/or denser sound proofing materials on the firewall/behind dash and in the foot wells too

No no, my narrative has shrunk and feels rather, well, lowly and insignificant now.
