Tsunami
Jesus I have just watched that wave come inland after the Japanese earthquake.
10 meter high wall of water arriving at about 500 mph. slowing to about 100 as it moves in, but completely devastating.
Wow! It just chucked a freighter up over the wave and broke it's moorings. He's trying to turn it out to sea and put full power on. (exhaust smoke). Fucking amazing!!!

Fuuuuuuuuuck. That was the first I knew about it when I read your post, I don't really follow the news. Haven't seen the video you describe but seen pictures of the destruction. Very scary.

Re: Tsunami
I had had the TV completely off and as it booted up BBC News 24 was on.
The video's from helicopters are all over the net now. I have never seen anything like it, the Boxing day one in 2004 was a kindergarten pool compared with this. There was a huge whirlpool over a mile wide in the sea, just outside the harbour. The wave swamped the airport
at the same height as the entry gantry that was set waiting for a jumbo, Awesome.
The actual earthquake was 8.9 Richter, with aftershocks bigger than the NZ one. Latest pics show an oil refinery ablaze.

Be a bit grim if one of those nuclear power plants goes bang. You would think witha ll that water cooling woulnt be a problem?

Re: Tsunami
When you shutdown a reactor it remains very hot for a long time The rods are pulled and go into cooling ponds. This water is then obviously irradiated and is pumped round through coolers. If the water level drops too far the uranium rods will eventually appear above water and automatically re heat rapidly, giving off Cesium 235, mainly in gas form.
As far as humans are concerned this is not a good substance although iodine is a good antidote.
Either the ponds have fractured (which I can't believe) or the water system has failed.
There are 3 separate systems, one electrical, one mechanical and a backup system diesel driven and stand alone. These are old stations that have been affected. Methinks someone hasn't been keeping up their maintenance and test schedules up to date.
Oh and if the rods do heat up it will go bang sorry.

It actually happened before you posted Phil:Philhod wrote: Oh and if the rods do heat up it will go bang sorry.
At 18:43 JST (9:43 GMT), officials confirmed that an explosion had occurred at the nuclear plant.[38] Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano indicated -according to a Reuters report of 21:36 JST (7:36 ET), that the concrete outer structure had collapsed as a result of a hydrogen explosion triggered by falling water levels.

Re: Tsunami
Just been announced on the news that a second reactor at the same site has had its cooling disrupted and it too is overheating with a risk of meltdown.

Although somewhat cleaner. Even though cesium is nasty, strontium was a lot worse

Re: Tsunami
Ah! Just read the latest reports. The explosion has been put down to a build up of Hydrogen,
It's used in liquid form to cool the stator yolks, obviously heated and turned to gas.
If thats true, that;s it it's gone and won't happen again.
I went to look at the stations themselves. They are second generation units, which means they have containment structures that can contain a full meltdown, so no real danger then.
They also claim that their rods are only enriched to 5% so there won't be a nuclear explosion.
The higher the enrichment the harder it is to put out the resulting fire.
All UK stations had containment structures from the very first built, in the world. It took the rest of the world 30 years to follow suit.
Calder Hall's fire, in 1967 maintained their rods were only at 5%. I know for a fact ( I was on site a few years later)that they were producing Plutonium and the enrichment would have been nearer 40%

Re: Tsunami
see, I've watched the footage of it going pop several times now, and it definitley looks like a proper nuke type bang initially, before the smoke starts.
According to the news, right now, they are saying that the hydrogen was created by the rod casing breaking and the outpouring mixing with the colling water, causing hydrogen?
I dunno, but they also say "the roof has collapsed" and yet again, if you look at the various footage kicking about, it aint just the roof thats missing, the whole fucking building is wankered!
