Re: Internet Speed
ORSUM!
And then not.
We spend £50/ month (well about £46 actually) on "media" services from Virgin.
This is:
10 - 20 meg broadband (never less than 10 meg, occasionally 15 to 20)
Telephone with all you can use evening and weekend calls to other land lines or virgin mobile phones.
Tellyvision (HD) we get Sky and UK gold and stuff, but TBH I dont watch it, its the wife - I would be happy as pie with freeview
1x mobile phone with 300 texts/300minutes/3000 virgin to virgin minutes.
I no longer have a BT line to the house.

Re: Internet Speed
Doc, are you sure that you don't have an internal wiring problem if you have extension wiring? I had this same problem and it seemed to be affected by the weather. I found that a telephone socket was wet inside because the outer insulation on the external drop had rubbed and punctured allowing water to slowly feed down the cable inside and this water/deposits on the connections in the socket buggers up the broadband but less so the telephone.
Try disconnecting the extension wiring from the master socket and trying it then. If it's still shite, call BT and they should fix it for free because they can no longer blame it on any extension wiring. They will initially perform a remote test on the line while you are speaking to them for analysis of the problem.

Re: Internet Speed
I've replaced everything in the house, including the socket. BT tell me the new shit will "take time to settle down and find the best average speed" which seems to mean it's likely to remain shit.
Tempted by Virgin, however much I hate them.. Marty pays the same for what I'm paying for broadband and phone alone...

Re: Internet Speed
All I have is the cheapest pack from V, ie some extra channels + phone and broadband.
It cost me about the same as FT including my calls but I don't get free ones unlress they are to v phones land or mobile. I also have to pay a £2 odd premium to get cheap calls to Sweden.
The cheapest phone rates I have found is from Edge communications. I think they are down your end somewhere Doc. They were not providing broadband when I went to V, but IO think they are now.

Re: Internet Speed
I've got virgins 3 for £30 offering, which used to cost £26 (savings from paperless and DD), but now, after just three years costs £29. Its a focking joke how they keep sneaking it up year after year. For 10 years the price didnt change, now it goes up by twelve quid every year, and that will soon add up!

Re: Internet Speed
Well yeah. That's my impression too. I'm going to analyse what I'm getting against what I'm paying for soon.
Probably to make a change around christmas time, when all the offers come out of the woodwork

the welsh only got electricity a few years ago, not much chance of bastarding cable yet. The problem is Mat is a townie and trying to make the phone do things it really wasn't designed for!

Re: Internet Speed
Yay!
Finally (after asking Orange for my MAC code) they admitted there was something wrong, and got BT out to check things. They found one fault in the line, repaired that and the line speed was up to 1.5 Meg but he reckoned we should get faster than that. He found another fault, and ended up replacing the whole line back to the exchange.
He tested the line speed at 3.5 Meg, but said it would take a few days for our download speed to get up to that. Still, everything is zipping along rather nicely!
X tube here we come!
