Stainless Exhaust..opinions please

Post by Bx Bandit » 26 Oct 2007

Now, I'm not a chavvy boy racer but my back box on the valver is getting rather religious so it soon be time to replace it. As the genuine article is no longer available, I shall go the stainless route and will have it made by this s***h Atikan bloke in Cardiff.

What, in your collective opinions would be the least chavvy but best looking tail pipe design?

Also, there is a small silencer type deely half way along the the long pipe that joins onto the mani....I assume it is a silencer...? What would be the implications of taking it out altogether? Obviously I'm after better performance but without sounding like the local twins in their Corsa...if yer know what I mean!

Also...yes I do drone on...Backpressure: what exactly is it and how does it affect the engine?
ta chaps

google 'ricardo wave pressure tuning'

that should give you some reading and a half.
From a purely technical point of view, for best power output the length of the exhaust should be some where between 1.2 and 1.8 metres, and that is from the cylinder not the manifold. Obviously on the valver the exhaust DOESNT come out of the sides!

the little box is not a silencer but a resonator, designed to create back pressure and not make the exhuast quieter. I know of people who have removed them, i'd say thats a bloody stupid idea if you want a) power b) economy!

Unfortunately for us (and like most engine related things) the exhaust is quite well designed, i doubt you will get any performance increase by changing the exhaust alone. You'd have to look at removing silencers (making it unbearably loud) then remapping the ECU.

I guess this is a little bit personal as plenty of people have messed with the exhaust system, but typically to no benefit from what i can tell. Stainless is the way to go if your keeping the car though.

Stainless is a great idea.
Keep the resonator, as Vanny says, it'll fuck it up a treat if you dont, also make sure whoever makes it puts a splitter in the down pipe, that really does make a difference.

The easiest way to gain 5BHP is remove the crossbox and fot a "sidewinder", but it really does make things FOOOKING loud.

Again, as Vanster said, the exhaust is pretty much spot on in standard trim, so a stainless version of that is the best way to go.
As for the tail pipe..... well, thats personal choice.
Personally I like big and round with a rolled lip if your going the stainless route, other than that, I do actually like the tail pipe on PP's car.

Am getting far less cash than I thought :( Why is it ALWAYS that way round? So, I'll have to keep it to the back box...not sure about this sidewinder idea....don't have any mates in the army so will be hard to get hold of one...besides a bloody great missile that close to a petrol tank is...er...no!
Don't want it chavved up and loud mate...I'll have to move up to Chestah if I do

Think I'm with you on big and round....my mate rekons two smaller twin pipes but I'm not convinved..

Noooooo, two small pipes.... ghey....

You could of course get a standard back box then find a local indy cit / pug garage and ask if you can nick the chrome tail pipe off something like a 306 etc..
