Front Suspension Problem

Post by Way2go » 02 Nov 2007

Got what seems a wierd problem at the moment, one of these I thought would go away and it did for a while when I changed a failed strut but it's back with me again.

Wondered if it could be down to the FDV, symptoms are:

When parked car settles at front, back stays up.

This recently happened when parked for only an hour or so.

In normal setting car does not rise at front but has done on intermediate and then will stay up. Today it would not rise until put in Top setting and then was ok in normal.

LHM level OK and not losing any.

Any ideas? (Front height corrector was replaced about 3 years ago just because of missing cap so shouldn't be this)

Wont be the FDV.
It's not a defect in itself that the front saettles before the back, some do.
Check the linkages on the H/C carefully, then check the clamp on the roll bar.
If the clamps tight and the linkages are not siezed and attached properly to the H/C then chances are the H/C is on it's way out..

It is a possiblity that the linkages are seized. How can you check them as they are presumably always stiff due to being attached to the arb? I have sprayed penetrating oil followed by lithium spray grease on the joints I can see.
What method is recommended to sort out these linkages so I can be sure?

It's not uncommon for the linkages to sieze, althougth it's usually the rear linkage that does since the front is usually plastered in LHM and engine oil!

If they're covered in accumulated shite and look rusty or have rust staining the best thing to do (I find) is get a tub os something like LS-EP2 grease and mix it with some old engine oil.
Then plaster it all..

Does the lever in the car feel tight to move?

No, lever in the car moves nicely over all notches.

Seems to always need a boost in intermediate to get the front to raise and then will go down to normal and maintain when selected. :?

Could this be air in the system since changing the n/s front strut? Is the system supposed to be self purging on the suspension side of things or is there another technique here?

that will be a sticky under carriage linkage that will be. There oval ish shaped so that they can pivot a little, when you have to bump it up to intermediate then back down it typically means there is no lube on the linkage and so it sint sliding properly, remember every time the car sinks the ARB sensor moves so the HC should correct its self, so long as it knows where to go!
