The "Im On Nights" Thread

Post by Father Ted » 08 Mar 2011

This week is going to be a veritable wilderness of the interweb because Im on nights for the first time in about 12 years.

I hates em, but with the new job they have to be done. Already had 2 call outs and its only half eleven.

So, Im starting this trhead because due to rude word filters I cant access my normal thread, nor the LT section at all.

Im off for a coffee in a little while and Im trying to pace myself. Been hunting high and low for a pair of scissors that we should have, but I cant find.
That'll be fun in the morning!

Ew deah!!!!! I suppose we have to be extra polite on here then.

Worked permanent nights for 13 years Ted. Fu...oh sorry flipping hated them for about 10 weeks, then got into the routine and loved them after that.

We were on a regular shift though. 9-30 pm till 7-45 am Mon - Thur and every weekend off.
That and the fact that 4 nights paid the same as 6 days. :D No contest. 8)

Funnily enough just been out to a self harmer. No scissors though.
I fully expect them to be in someones pocket and mysteriously turn up again tomorrow. (today, whatever.)

Last did nights 12 years back, when I did a month and it was something like 4 nights on, 3 off, 8 on, 6 off, 4 on 3 off - days.
This time its 7 on, 7 off once every 12 weeks and another £250 in the pay packet for the privilage.

Done all the checks, done my rounds for now, read all the papers. Booger all on telly. Eaten some toast and a WHOLE packet of Tuc cheese biscuits.

4am is when the rot usually sets in with me and I start talking gibberish (though I did a good job on the radio talk through at 11pm), still at 4am I just have to get past the suicide rounds and then Im home and dry with the early start coming in sometime between 7 and half past depending on which nurse is on duty!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh

Logged on and there is a new post on the m0j0 thread - only I cant read it as its "filtered" at work.

Night number 2 out of 7.
Done the checks, done the meds, done the paperwork.

MUST RESIST EATING.

All I did last night was patch people up and eat. Anyway, you will all be pleased to know the scissors have turned up. Didnt get a huge great deal of sleep today, about 3 and a half hours, and whilst I dont feel too bad just now I know from past experience I will feel naff about 3am onwards and be talking gibberish frrom 4 am onwards.
My early start is not known for arriving too early anyway, that said I have the kids to take to school in the morning so wont be off to bed too early anyway, and the double glazing firm are coming tomorrow to install some drainage for the downspout!
They still insist that (despite telling me about drainage on 3 occasions) that it wasnt priced up, nor do they routinely fit drainage to conservatories.....

Hmmm, Im feeling a BELM coming on.

That's the killer Ted, you gotta stay off the food. Big time
I was working on assembly running a gang when I was on nights and we had fixed breaks.
11 o clock brew, dinner at 2 and 5 o clock brew. The amount of moving around and working conditions prevented eating anything in between. We worked contract piecework too which meant if all your work and time was in by 5 to 5-30, you got yer head down in some hidy hole with coats over you, Was fuc  freezing in winter.
I even got an old cupboard shotblasted and fitted a gas ring up in it, to provide a bit of heat.
Looking back it worked quite well and warmed the pies.

3.30am and the rot has set in.
4 hours to go. Faff all on telly apart from old Gladeators on PICK-TV.
Everyone seems to be asleep, except me.
And frankly all I want to do is get my shoes & trousers off and lie down :x
