Can I pick your brains please?

Post by catsinthewelder » 06 Apr 2011

Hello gentlemen

I've been on mammoth overtime at work lately and have been ignoring both the car and the internet somewhat, but my colleague (the irritating dwarf) has returned from leave so I have the mornings to myself again. As its sunny i decided to investigate the various maladies of Chubley the BX.

Right in no particular order

Image

Here we have some loose wires, they are coming out of the bulkhead behind the battery near the speedo drive. Could this be why the rev counter is knackered? Would anybody happen to know which order to solder them together?

Right next one

This rather oily collection of pipes with a small piece of rubber trim cable tied on connects to the accumulator sphere and appears to be leaking. It looks like somebody has connected up rather more pipe than strictly necessary, is there something in these pipes or could I just shorten them and hopefully cure the leak?

Thanks for reading :D

Once I've got these sorted, changed the front pipe of the exhaust and the oil+filter she should be ok again 8)

I can help you with the wires, but I'll leave the hydraulics to someone who knows! That would rather explain the lack of rev counter. I've just had a look at mine, and the black isn't connected to anything, the red goes to a brown wire, and the white also (helpfully) goes to another brown wire....

EDIT - had another look with a multimeter, and despite losing several gallons of blood after stabbing myself with an unnecessarily sharp probe, I can confirm the red wire goes to the ignition switched +ve brown wire .

[chin] Not quite sure what I'm looking at here (accy pipes) They look like standard metal to rubber style parts to me.
Spray some gunk on and wash it off, you will then be able to see where the green stuff is coming from.
Usually all thats needed is the unions nipping up and make sure the pressure relief screw is err screwed in. If the joints still leak after tightening the rubber inserts want replacing. Sometimes I have had a loose sphere, again just nip up.
If the leak is from where the metal joins the rubber, they need replacing.
Make sure you de pressurise before taking any pipework off and only nip up the joints, don't overtighten.

If you're referring to the long "U" shaped rubber/metal/rubber pipe looking rather excessive, it's supposed to be like that. This pipe stops the repeated surges (vibrations) from the HP pump being passed to the steering, it is also the ONLY pipe in the high pressure system that isn't metal.

As Phil quite rightly points out, almost all leaks in this area are from the unions on the FDV and accumulator. A quick nip upo usually sorts it.

Good to have you back you old Bible Star...

Thanks guys,

Rather stupidly I sprayed a load of gunk on after taking the pics rather than before  Doesn't it give you loverly soft hands [chin]

I'll try and have a better look at the pipes over the weekend now they're a bit cleaner. Its good to know that all that pipe is supposed to be there, theres some interesting bodges on the car and I was suspicious that this was one of em.

Thanks again
Rich

As per Mat, the shirld wire is not used on the BX rev counter setup, and the rev counter itself will work regardless of which way round you wire the remaining pair since the coil isn't polarity sensitive.

Said pipe, also as stated above, is as it should be, and I very much doubt that pipe itself has a leak, since if it had you'd have fuck all LHM in now, it's a proper HP pipe, so a leak from it would be significant!

Howdo guys

Just packed up the tools as it started to rain after spending 2 mornings tinkering with it.

Nipped up a loose connection and the bleed valve and found the return on the n/s strut was leaking so attended to that. Lots of degreasing of the engine, new oil and filter with the filter a bit tighter this time and a new copper washer on the sump plug so hopefully less oily leaks [pray]

Rev counter now working and new exhaust front section fitted.

Thanks for all the help and advise

:( Was finishing the security fence off at the back of my place this morning, when it suddenly decided to piss down. So I dragged all the stuff into the workshop and retreated back to the decorating in the back room. By the time I had moved all the stuff in there and got the covers down for the next section of paint, it was lunch time.
Then after lunch, the sun came out again so I was able to secure the sections.
It's not finished yet, will do it tomorrow, if it keeps off rain!

 Then it's back to the decorating. [vomit]

:D Fence now completed. It looks the DB's. I'll take some picks tomorrow, it was time for the gym today, by the time I'd finished, so no time.
What with drilling nearly 100 holes and pop riveting the clips in place, then a good hour on the weights, I'm fair goosed. I dozed off after tea........ must be getting old or something. :P 8)
