xm split

Post by charlie » 06 Mar 2008

am almost ready to lift the 2.1 and its autobox out of the car

and was trying to make sense of the haynes manual as it doesnt seem to cover the spliting of an autobox from a diesel engine

so working on the petrol/auto description which i assume is the same

but wanted more info on the rpm sensor and securing bolt, as haynes says that this must be secured prior to seperation

haynes says

"remove the rpm sensor from the bellhousing"

"once the transimission is free [from the engine] and sufficient clearance exists, insert a bolt with a suitable washer, through the rpm sensor hole in the transmission bellhousing to retain the torque convertor on the transmission"

soooo......

i have disconnected two electrical connectors from the gearbox

one on top of the box, by the gear selector balljoint/cable and the other, to the side accessed near the n/s driveshaft/wheel arch

im assuming the top bit is the rpm sensor????

where does the bolt then fit through???

what size/length bolt??

and why wait till seperation????

Right then.
I assume you obviousley know about unbolting the three bolts that hold the torque converter to the flexi plate?

Once this is done (oh hang on, I assume you're obviousley spillting the engine from the box when it's all out of the car?)..
Assuming you are splitting things with the lump on the deck then the bolt will need to be about 2 1/2" long, although TBH you could use a 10" bolt and leave it sticking out the hole....

That said, I've nevr used a bolt or anything else for that matter, I just have the engine on an abgle so the box is facing downhill and slide the lot off. Never had a torque converter fall off yet, although it's no big deal if it does, just make sure when you put it back on that the lugs on the converter line up with the lugs on the oil pump.

I refit the same way, engine on an angle slide box up to it.
But I guess for reassembly purposes it would be safer to lock the torque converter...

By "remove the rpm sensor from the bellhousing" I would take that to mean remove the sensor not just the wire and insert your longer bolt where it was fitted. :?
But what do I know 'cos I havent done one. :( Better wait till a man who has comes along.

Aye, thats the ticket, remove the sensor complete and wham said bolt in through the hole.
Although I never have.

But... anything thats long and round and fits the hole will do really.
If you're that way inclined...

so all im really doing is sliding any old bolt into the sensor hole to stop the torque
convertor from falling out

hmmm things become clearer

Christ, cant think of anybody off the top of me head there mate TBH!!

Failing finding an expert I could probably find some time over the coming weeks to stop by and tell you how dismal your future looks!!

There's not alot to know mate. It's a autobox. Quite a clever autobox for the era, but in essence, it's just an epicyclic box with a rudimentry valvechest and a resonably clever lock up arragement.

I should have more spare time towards the end of April / start of May assuming the valver is finished by then like...
I'll try and keep a weekend free for you.
