Right, ya know the little plate that attaches to the gearbox and covers the lower bit of the bell housing?
As viewed from looking under the engine towards the gearbox....
Well, if you rotate the engine (crank) then a bolt will come into view, 13mm IIRC, undo said bolt then rotate the crank again until the next bolt somes into view, undo and repeat again.
There be three of the little feckers see.
Undo them and the torque converter will fall off the flexi plate like.

Er, not quite, they can only be seen in the lower 1/3 of the arc of the flexi-plate, since the block gets in teh way like...Philhod wrote: Now the box is off, they should be visible from anywhere on the engine side of the flywheel.... I mean anywhere the engine isn`t in the way

Yeah I think that`s what I meant really, that it would be easier to see them now the box is off, rather than with just the plate off and the lump still together
Well something like that

Change the filter, with the torque converter off the box empty as much oil as you can out of it.
Oil pmps can fail, but unless you want to get involved in stripping the box down other than filter and oil I'd leave well alone.
Adjust the kick down cable properly on reassembly though.

was thinkin about getting in a little deeper,
it was the half the reason for me pulling the big lump of twatin engine out
and if i can rectify any problems now it means that the xm will run smooth for years to come
but i be the first to put me hand up and say that i need advice, help and strong alcohol
ssssoooooooooooooooooooo
got some pdf files for de gearbox, off the xm site which trouble shoot in a bit more detail,
but what wears and fucks these gearboxs up
will i be able to spot it given that the box is still a runner,
i mean would like to say its a good 'en, but given the neglect its had i wonder how long it will last without this intervention

good on you matey, it takes finance, and nerve to take on a big project (such as this) with a single goal of total reliability and i applaud you for it (even if it is an XM ). Remember your ideally looking for a final output that is better than the car that rolled off the production line and that is no mean feat, but you know how to ge tthe advice, weigh it up and act on it, so i reckon you'll come out smelling of roses!
I know fuck all about automatics (other than the fact that i can drive them and intuitively left brake without hitting the steering wheel), so can't help on this matter!

Oil pumps are known to go a little shite. I dont believe a rebuild kit is available but new pumps are.
Other than that, brake band, bearings, clutch packs.
There aint alot else, unless you want to get into stripping the valve chest and reseating the valves. But frankley, that can cause more trouble than it fixes if you dont get it right.
Rebuild kits are available for the valve chest.
I watched three being rebuilt before I tackled one on the grounds that there is alot of little pieces that can go walkies.
As ever, cleanliness is of the absolute upmost importance.
A tiny bit of shit on the seats and you'll fuck the drive up right royally.

gonna do fuck all till after easter now
and then its gonna be the head first
but will still be fishin for info on this box
strange though cause i asked what goes wrong with these xm autogearboxs on the xm forum and no has yet given me a definitive answer
maybe there aint one but cant see all the boxs dying of all sorts of different things
what ive been told is that with the series 1 they overheated but in the series 2 they've fitted a gearoil cooler
what seems more likely is a fuck up with the oil itself, dirty or plain wrong type but waht this does to the inside of the gearbox is still a mystery to me
