fuckin big fucin box fuc

Post by charlie » 19 Apr 2008

back on the topic of me xms autogear box

the doc reckons that that i fuckin crazy like to mess with it and the best i should be doing is cleaning the fucker up and leave it be

but...

with all respect to the doc it still seems a shame to do nowt :(

sooooooooooo with ive been pestering people with me mobile

seems for the professionals to recon the box will cost me the about £900

but i boxed a bit clever like and got askin them about the zf gearbox

and two of them said it was usually the oil pump that went which then sent me scurrying around to find out what this job entailed....

then this got me to another geezer who wants me to ring him back monday cause he was 80% to 90% certain that he could get a brand new box for about £500

he reckons that there wasnt much call for them and someone was bound to have one just lying about like

hmmmmmmm

I think the Doc is giving you good advice.

If it aint broke, don't fix it!

The new box? Well again for £500 do you NEED it or would that £500 be better spent on something else? :?

:? :? :? :?

[chin] [chin] you could.......
1) Clean up what you have and put it all back together; pull it apart when the g/box goes TA
2) Clean up & buy a new pump :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
3) Buy the new one for £500

if you are keeping the mean mean cream machine then op 1 is 'do-able'....if not, then you may as well look at 2 and 3. Dunno bud. If you can make the wonga on a bit of o/t then maybe op 3 sounds ok....???

I don't get it.....
You dont want to spend money replacing the strut tops which are clearly FUCKED, but yet you want to replace a gearbox which still works???

Am I missing something here??

If you're really keen to get involved in the box then:
Go get an oil pump. It's easy enough to change and not horrendousley expensive.
BUT... If you're going to do the pump, yer may as well strip the valve chest and re seat all the valves (but be warned, it's an absolute arse of a job, and the potential to lose bits is huge).
Then, since the box is in bits, yer may as well replace the brake band (which will need re adjusting after 1000 miles) and the clutch baskets.
If you've gone that far then bearings (especially the front bearing) may aswell be renewed.
In which case, rebuild the box.
But be warned, and I really really cannot overstress this, whilst an autobox is in essence simpler than a manual transmission, EVERYTHING has to be spotlessly clean, and ideally any internal work should be done in as near clinical conditions as possible, especially when stripping the valve chest.
The potential to take a box that works, rebuild it, refit it and then discover it dont work at all is large.

If it worked as it should before then I'd personally I'd flush the fucker out, bung a new filter in it and leave alone.
If it was an S1 without the oil cooler I'd say go for it, cos it'll be dead soon anyway, but yours has the oil cooler right?

in the kitchen, with everthing cleaned with genclene in the workshop first.
put into plastic bags according to position. All was laid out on loads of A1 white paper and clinicly reassembled. :P
Wasn`t too popular for a while though

anyways me period of thinkin is nearly over

and unless i get stinkin rich very quick like

the gearbox will be goin back in with its bits left unfiddled with

the guy who said he could get a new box for £500 didnt deliver

he could only get a used box from a petrol xm and that aint no good to me

so armed with a sample of the gearbox oil went to see a recommended auto box specialist who i had chatted with on de phone

said the oil was probably the original stuff and dirty but not burnt

the zf gearbox was a good box, good for 150000 miles and other bla bla bla stuff

so cuttin a long story short he said

look yer fat bastard just put the fuckin thing back in and cross yer fingers cause yer a cunt

so i had a last

hmmmmmm

and thats what im gonner do

i think
