So, you actually have to ask PCTools for the uninstall program?
What a bunch of wankers!

Fuck it.... I'll get Vanster to sort the bad thing out, then ply him with drink to say thanks!

:) Err well no not really I could have done it myself, but seeing I had just paid £ 29 for it (ok
£19-99 on a promo code) They could bloody well fix it for me.

I have their official un install programme left on my machine. I was just asking if there was a way of me sending it to you if you were having problems getting rid of it. They also left an upgraded version on here, to re install if needed.

It was just an enquiry as I have no idea if you can pass things like this around or not

Right...
I tried being a bit clever...
Using direct disc editibg,m I have changed the first two bytes of the PCTools header on the disc to 00.

The machine now starts without 4 million error messages after removing PCTools from the startup bar in msconfig..

Phil's sending me the uninstall program, so once I've arsed PCTools out, I'm going to go back to AVG since I never had any trouble with it..

What I stuill cant work out though is why was PCTools causing delayed write failure?
Assuming the two incidents of failure were not just coincidental..?

but then, if it was coincidental, how come the errors stopped when PCTools stopped working altogether..

argh..

The program is acting as a gateway so if it gets it's knickers in a twist it will be opening and closing the gate on occasions it shouldn't. If your PC works OK without it then corruption in this program is as you suspect the likely cause.

But if you didn't have problems with AVG, why did you migrate to this lesser stuff? AVG has to my knowledge always been rated the best of the free antivirus programs. :? Does this in fact offer something important that AVG doesn't? :?

I was duped really.
Terry on BXC said AVG Free was being binned, and then said about PCTools, which he rated as being the best thing since sliced bread.
Ok, actually it was fine, had no problems with it at all, until it did a major database upgrade a few weeks back.
Then it all went to hell in a handbasket.

Ah!

I wonder if this was his sales pitch to gain new local customers and then when he was found out telling such "porkies" that his credibility plummeted and he had to exit the game and do something else? To tell untruths like that is unprofessional!

I know I never got any sense out of him on my Win ME crashing when I was using that. He said he was consulting his "database" but would never give an answer.

To be fair though, everyone was saying "Urgh, ME's your problem" but it wasn't, it was defective memory as I established myself much later.

Every dude in the computer business I've ever spoken to has said AVG is as good as it gets.
I'm inclined to agree..

I looked up a pub website the other day for an address where I was to meet a mate and AVG came back and said it was a known suspicious site that infects your computer either deliberately or because of an external hacking attack. It blocked the website and offered options to navigate away or to ignore warning and go to it.

Now that I thought was impressive. :D

AVG s not the dogs testicals of the antiviral world. There are plenty of viruses that it can't remove, but its a drop in the ocean in comparison to the number that Norton can't get rid of! I don't know of any AV package that can get round all viruses, but thats the whole point, different people make viruses to exploit different packages.

I must admit it took me a long time to move away from Norton, not because i didnt trust AVG to do the job, but because Norton on the face of it is idiot proof. Then they took away the ability t control norton (specifically in Norton 360), and stopped it from removing viruses, and it became a waste of space!

Well I have both PC Tools programmes, the spyware one and the err...make your computer quicker again one.
All the problems I was having before, (Vanny knows what a mess that was when I just had Macafee, the free one I got from Dell) are now a thing of the past.
One strange thing though; When Macafee does a scan, it tells me to run spyware doc to view the results??? Now that's what I call integration !!! :?

[chin] Mmmh, Integration is not what I'd call it, more insideous control that makes it difficult to get rid of should you later want to. But hey, if it works for you...... :D
