Supercharging
All this talk of recent successful 'chargers has made me review my old plans of the Rotrex variety.
I already have all the bumph i downloaded a couple of years ago but does anyone know where there's a stockist as the Interweb is being useless! Got a decent bonus coming in March so i'm looking at an SP30-84 standalone kit.
Anyone reckon it would be cheaper to buy abroad and ship it?

You'd need something more specialist than Tweeks i suspect, i mean they're based in Wales so probably think a Defender is modern technology!
I was having a chat with one of the EMS (Engine) guys the otherday while climbing, general jist was its not worth bothering with a supercharger on an Mi16, the best bet is to graft a turbo in.
Of course you'll need engine management etc etc
(PS thats not my view on the supercharger, i'd do it in a flash if i could!)

IMO using the DFW and the 30/84 (as an oppose to the smaller 74 which unless you start giving it engine destroying amounts of boost is only reliable up to 250/260 BHP) you could get a reliable 300 BHP and still have low enough compression for a 50 shot of N2o without blowing the lid off the engine. This would of course mean starting out with an overhauled DFW, which AFAIK are as rare as rocking-horse shite...
When i looked at all this a couple of years ago there was a negligible cost difference between both chargers, so why not go all-in!
Still, my digging this morning hasn't found me any suppliers...

DFW refers to the later 16v engine, usually fitted to the 'cat models. It has lower compression (9.5:1 as an oppose to our 11:1) and would suit FI better. It's that or a decompression plate, but way too unreliable when you've spent all them beans on it!Bx Bandit wrote:

hmm, think about the tuning, and the fuel economy and the rediculous temperatures that will be induced in the exhaust. In the case of Jags they have typically dumped masses of fuel through the engine, not to burn but to cool the exhaust. 300bhp and 8mpg for a supercharger, compared with 20+bhp for a turbo!

In my case it's only gonna be a fair weather driver anyway so the cost per mile is pretty much irrelevent.
Running cost & power ain't the problem, it's gonne be traction that's the killer! What we really need is our little genius Vanny to come up with a traction-control system using the ABS sensors (he says tossing down the preverbial gauntlet), i think all he'd need is something along the line of a drive-by-wire throttle (potentiometer) and a little black box that senses road speeds across the axle and cuts power back when it spins up... Piece of cake eh Vanster?

why something so clever?
Just use a Mondildo system! all it does is apply the brakes to control the traction.. and uses the ABs sensors to do so, as do I believe all cars with TC??

I think from a technical point of view cutting the throttle is more basic and easily achieved than creating something that will physically apply the brakes...
You're thinking far too fancy for the kind of TC i want... there are 2 basic types of TC:
1. Balls-out high performance i.e. Evo, Scooby, Porsche, Ferrari etc which controls throttle, individual brakes, diffs etc...
2. Anti-slip TC as in Transits, my Panda and most regular road cars which just cuts throttle when the drive wheels start to lose traction... That's the one i want and i don't think it would be that difficult to devise for someone with the electronic knowhow... (cue Vanny's response)...

Wouldn't cutting the throttle reduce performance (more than the alternative system anyway?) My logic is that if you're coming out of a corner, the inside wheel will want to spin. Wit the simpler type of TC system, power will be reduced (I have half a memory they can do this by retarding the timing?) so you'll lose time. With the 'apply the brakes' type, the inside wheel will get braked and potentially (if it can take the traction which it should do given the weight transfer) the remaining amount of engine power is sent to the outside wheel.
Have you considered an LSD? I would bet that one is fairly easily available off the shelf given the number of 205s that go rallying. Or are you more concerned with straight line traction?

Well it looks like Supercharging is gonna be a goer!
Got a price this morning and my god they've come down in price since i looked at it a couple of years ago:
C30/84 Charger (inc. oil system & pulley): £1750
Bespoke Intercooler: around £250
Bespoke Mounting Bracket: £100
Total Around £2200
Then there's just mappable Engine management & setup cost... let's say that takes it up to £3k with a bit to spare for the remaining pipework etc..
All i need is: the DFW i'm looking for and some decent suggestions on Engine Management!
