Well, ok, mild steel. Angle to be more precise. I have noticed in the past that mild steel angle can sometimes come with a radius on the inner corner and some times a right angle. Is that a coincidental difference or not? If not, is there a specific name for each different types?

Doc, what does your supplier charge for 50 x 50 x 5 angle mate?

I used to use a lot angle for fabrication at the HGV workshop, i'm pretty sure the radius is inconsequential, mine used to vary depending on where my ironmonger got his supplies from month to month. Although it's fair to say the radius would add an amount of extra strength.

I've ordered various steel online and the company i get if from offeres free delivery on orders over £75 and their service has been excellent with competetive prices. Let me know if you want it and i'll dig out the URL. To be fair though, unless you're getting it out of a skip it isn't that cheap anywhere ATM.

too right, a quick look on ebay says about £30 for 3 meters!

The actual radius is inconsequential as I want angle iron without a radius. If I'm to keep my current trailer axle (which historically has been cut and welded back together - badly with camber and toe in) then I want to cut and re-weld, using some right angled angle to strengthen (or replace it)

You can get perfectly good 2nd hand stuff at half the price Bandit! if yo want to fit it inside the original just grind a chamfer on the outside corner.

Also, you can use 45 x 45 x 6 flat bar, cladding the outside. That will put almost the same strength in and is considerably cheaper.

The lip radius just depends on where it was made.

You can likely pick up (buy cheap) various sizes of angle from Demolition Contractors that do Commercial/Factory work, ex roof trusses etc.

Downside is that it will have several coats of paint already on it.

I'm not really worried about the cost TBH, the dude I use isn't all that cheap, but he is really helpful, local and always gets what I want, when he says he will.

Well I've never NOT found what I wanted or an alternative. There is a humungous scrappy near me and there is always stuff available

And he still sells it by the foot if it's 2"x2" x1/4" (£2)

In Reading, there was the Manor Farm Sewage Works operated by Thames Water. At certain stages the ingesters or whatever gave off what the locals called the "Whitley Whiff".

Now Thames Water have built a new sewage works elsewhere and sold off the old site for development. This has already now been developed and named Kennet Island with houses, shops and even a Hilton Hotel!

Thanks Jay, it works out at £34 for a 3 metre length of 2" angle. I must admit I thought steel was cheaper.....or am I stuck in the dark ages?!

I could use some bar as you suggest Phil, although I need some angle anyway to extend the sides of the trailer, but that stuff can have the rad on the inside. I thought one was cold formed and the other hot formed or some such, resulting in the differences of a radius or right angle.

There is/was a great metal workshop who would let you have stuff for nowt of his scrap pile but last time I was there his pile was almost non existent!

You beat me to it there JD. I would have thought that would have been an excellent growing medium, specially Rhubarb!!!

Certainly better than heavy metals and indeterminate oils, although digging out for an extention
may produce a few unpleasant surprises

It was cheap, but not anymore, largely because the chinese aint buying much, so the scrap price is still shite, but everyone seems to be stockpiling what there is floating about, hence the cost of new is artifically high.

I'm not sure about that guys, I believe the site was classified Toxic and to comply with Planning they had to remove something like 3 metres depth of the surface, truck it & dump it and then replace it with good topsoil!

I also seem to remember that a housing estate somewhere near Bristol was built on a dump or something and the gardeners there found their cabbages grew blue! I believe it was found to be due to Cobalt contamination.

Yes, exactly!! although you can grow decorative cabbage of several colours, including blue.

However I don't remember cobalt blue as an option
