Project G16VBX back underway...

Post by jayw » 29 Jul 2010

So, this mornin' i gets up, checks the weather forecast and decides to go do some work on the Valver... was just going to do some fiddling & fettling but somehow i ended up doing this:

Anyway, i discovered the Hardy Disc is utterly fucked (glad i've not been driving it really as it's 75% gone through)

Image

1. Anyone know of a supplier?

Also, some may remember me mentioning there being a engine/gbox mounting lug snapped off:

Image

2. Think it can be welded back on successfully??? If so, i need to find a mobile welder locally that's capable or transport the whole lot somewhere to be done.

I'll be removing the power rack in favour of the new (and more reliable) manual rack i have in the garage.

3. So, what pipework can i remove? (i'd like to remove as much unnecessary piping as possible)

4. Am i right in assuming the arrowed pipe below is the return coming back under from the rack re-supplying the FDV & running back to the tank or is it supplying the FDV and the rack?

Cheers chaps!

Actually, reviewing some other info i have... is the FDV even necessary now i'm losing the power steering???

Can the pump not be piped directly to the accumulator/regulator?

nice work!
No you wont need the FDV if the PAS is going, but I'll gladly relieve you of it!!

Why on earth have you put a dowel in the diff?

So thats the block that has failed... shit! hmm, should be weldable I guess, although you'd most likely want to remove all oily shit from it first..
Unless you want another block?

ahh yes, dowel for early BE boxes only mate..

Oh, since the car will be non PAS then you can still get hardy discs for said from GSF.. Oddly enough you can't get PAS hardy discs anymore...
Which given that 98% of bX's had PAS is a bit odd.

My blue TurGiD was non PAS and TBH I never found it an issue - which is odd because my last Micra was non Pas and was like a Jersey Cow to park.

Personally I like PAS, largely because I just love spending my whole life fixing LHM leaks, and the more shit there is on the car that uses it, the more there is to leak

As for the dowel, i've always done it be it BE1 or 3, force of habit (that's actually a "proper" tool i made up about 10 years ago from a marker pen with two drill bits taped to the sides of it - slots into the diff nicely)...

Doc, you can have the FDV if you can tell me how it needs to be piped back up without it! [weld]

I just want manual steering so there's less leaks/failures and well... yes... that really... (as well as easier maintenance simplifying the system and more space underneath)...

No i don't want another block thanks! I like the one i've got  I'll look to getting a pro in.

Cast ally welds fine. but cast iron is not worth it. I have never had any lasting success even with everything clean and using pre and post heat. It usually cracks again at the side of the weld within 12 months

cast iron stitches well though, I've seen some epic block work done with stitching..

Erm, I'll try and draw you a sketch of the piping required for non PAS, but essentially it's easier, in as much as, you'll need to make a new pipe from the pump to the PR, ditch all the pipework off for the PAS, replace or mod the large return pipe and I think thats about it actually..

I used to weld up Transit exhaust manifolds on a regular basis

Cheers Doc! Don't suppose you've got an inlet manifold on the scrap valver engine?

I didn't say it won't weld it does, but it never lasts, it always re cracks sooner or later.
I've even fitted mechanical staples over the weld and drilled into the end of the crack to stop it traveling, The problem is the grain in the casting all runs one way and unless you were extremely lucky your weld is not going to follow it, thus providing a built in failure point where the grain angles meet.
