Alternator
Had a non-start this morning - out of nowhere, not enough juice to start the battery, after months of daily use. Only clue is a couple of days ago the battery light didn't go out for a few seconds when I started the car one morning.
So I took the GSA to work.
This evening the BX started first time, like "normal", no labouring starter. I checked the voltage across the battery terminals. 12.16 V engine off, 12.04 V and decreasing with the engine running. Oh dear. Alt belt seems tight, alternator connections seem okay. Neg battery terminal is knackered (fractured)- a push fit but seems tight enough. I've got a new brass one so I'm going to replace it when I get time over Easter. If that's not the culprit, what else can I check before I condemn the alternator? Anyone got a spare regulator/brush unit I can try? Dunno what type it is, but I can get a serial number in the morning.
Cheers,
Mark.

Re: Alternator
If you are getting nothing and then it starts OK, I would be looking at A, that terminal and B, the otherconnections (solenoid/ starter). That has the hallmarks of a faulty connection to me !!

Re: Alternator
what he said /\
If the battery light is on with the ignition and goes out when the engine is running then that would indicate that the alternator output is higher than battery voltage so I'd be looking closely at the terminals on the battery, followed by giving the excitor wire a wiggle on the alternator itself (the little wire), thereafter I'd be checking resistance in the cable from the alternator to the battery + terminal..

I don't know how pissed I'd actually have to be not to be able to type - I'm slightly wankered at the moment (2 bottles) yet I think I am making sense. I am having to use backspace slightly more often however...Father Ted wrote:batteries these days seem to give ni indicarion of throwing a 7 and just sie, screw the negative twrminal siwn witha a little selft tapper in the positive terminal head,. There was indeed Bandit, I wanted to steal it, but no one else seemed to think it was a good idea..
I go through phases with booze.. At the moment I'm back on it again, and building up quite a toleance to it, but I'm also getting fat, so I really need to kick it in again..

Eeeeeeuuuuuuuuw
Stealing it would of been fun - but it might of thwarted your attemps at theft by dousing you with it's very powerful water gun! Get-away would of been rather slow, but as the entire midlands police force were out searching for two soundrels seen in a battered old red BX heckling the locals and shouting VAGINA you may well of stood a chance!

I've put a stone on in a month, all booze I reckon, and my hernia is poking out something chronic, ergo, I need to loose weight to keep the stomach where it should be!smiffy wrote:Chris darling, you are not fat! you look just about right.

Well that should bring you up to about a stone underweight thenI've put a stone on in a month,
Where's the hernia Chris? I have some core excercises that help with those a lot. It depends on where it is as to which you use though.
