Leak from cracked reservoir hose

Post by mnde » 01 Aug 2011

The STOP and (!) lights came on during my journey home today... Got home and opened the bonnet to be greeted by this:

Where the leak is coming from: the operational return from the pressure regulator/height correctors.

This pipe was repaired in 2006 - sleeved, after a leak occurred further up - hence the extra clips, arrowed in pic #2.

Can it be repaired again do you think? What's the chance of getting this pipe from Citroen and how much...?

I don't know but I would imagine they are available.
The last pipe I bought was one of those metal front to back ones about 3 meters long. About 2 years ago it was £11-72.
If not your local Pirtec or similar, will make one up. No idea on cost though

they *were* still available earlier this year, but they were also ~£90!

I'm not sure these are the same as valver pipes, but if they are, I do have a spare one you're welcome to..

Thanks Doc, I might just take you up on that... From the last picture I can see the other end terminates in a Y-joint; one branch goes to the pressure reg return and the other I presume picks up the return flow from the height correctors - any idea where this connects to? I can't see from above.

Cheers,

Also here's a little HD vid I took. There's LHM bloody everywhere, presumably blown about in the airflow. There was a constant trickle with the engine running. I tried looking while changing height from high to normal and while pressing the brake pedal, but there wasn't any squirting which is what it looked like it had been doing.

from memory, the 2 little legs off it disappear down the bulkhed and connect to something that I foget..
the large pipe carries on under the car and connects to the return fromthe steering.
I'm working til Sunday, but I can get you one in the post on Monday if that helps?
In the interim, cutting that pipe where it's split and stuffing a bit of copper tube in there with some clips should see you right for now. It's not high pressure, but it is high volume..

Hi Doc, that would indeed be a great help! One thing: Darrin's given me two part numbers for these
>5167 (1st Jan 1991) = 95 603 421
5167> = 96 119 048

and my car is Rp 5113. Any idea which part no. yours is? Don't know the score on interchangeability.

5113 is 8 November, 1990 according to the online ORGA/RP calculator!

Sods Law kicked in yesterday: someone scraped my GSA in the work carpark

Almost exactly the same place as happened in work carpark over two years ago (see crease in door and paint damage at leading edge of wing in first pic).

No note left. Have reported to Security and will get a crime no. from the rozzers.

If you take the strip off it looks as though it will push out without further damage, that one.

From the edge damage it looks as though they have backed out and turned the wheel too soon....as usual
When I last did up the BX I used to take the numbers of cars parked at the side of me

Paranoid or what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

bastards..
Pretty sure I have a pipe from a 90 car though, I'll have a look mate.

Not sure that crease wouls pop out perectly, I'd guess the top of the crease has stretched the skin, but then, the dues that do that local heat repair shit are fucking good these days..

Here's a vid:

Doc: the other thing Darrin told me is that he thinks all petrol BX's with PAS are the same part numbers, with the changeover on 1st Jan 91 as above, but diesels have a different pipe...

I've been away in Wales this week, so no further progress made until today...

Image

I found that the length of cunifer pipe used for the earlier repair was just long enough to stop the leak if I pushed it further down to bridge between the join and the new crack. Took it for a test drive after cleaning up the pipe first - no leakage. So I'm now confident it'll make it to Darrin's. Of course, he's recommended that a brand new return pipe is fitted, but if he can't get hold of one, I'll be coming back to you Doc!

here's the rub mate.. I have a pair of returns from 2 diesels, although according to my man in the know at 2CV's they are different and not directly interchangable. The one remaining 16Valve with return pipes in one piece is older than the moon and is cracking all over the place.. however, I've not been idle! They are NLA from Citroen, BUT, I might be able t get one form Poland of all places, a mate in work is on the case, almost as we speak!

Thanks mate, top detective skills! :D

I should say that the plan now is to get it fixed up and sell it at the end of the month. I loves my BXs, and I've had this one a fair while now, but it's too much of a financial and logistical strain for me keeping two specialist Citroens on the road. Both are suffering from my lack of funds/time to attend to them; the G especially. I'm looking for a good home for the BX. It's not perfect, but it's by no means a breaker.

When are you off down Under, Chris?
