Herr Doktor

Was sent to do a refresher first aid course this last 3 days, so I'm now qualified to hasten to their doom, those who would probably have snuffed it anyway.

OK It's a long time since I did one (1989) but all they did then was CPR, and a few questions. Now, we are bombarded with acronyms, everything is the same but has been re named for some reason and you have a written question paper and a bunch of oral questions on 5 out of 16 subject areas and he picks the 5 when you get sat in front of him
You then do a practical assessment on all 4 stages of CPR.

It was a good laugh though, with a good bunch of lads from about 5 different firms.

Wife says "well done I always said you were certifiable.

Do you mean numonics like 'DR. ABC'? There seems to be more and more and more of them every year.

The book seems to be tending away from 'You can't make it any worse' towards 'are you sure you should be doing that' which is a shame, but at least they haven't got to a point like they nearly did in the US a while back 'if you touch her, its rape'.

I quite like some of the motorsport ones, less about CPR more about the best way to roll a car over to get the bugger out!

They really should come up with some sort of law to make more people do first aid courses.

Unfortunately, because this country is becoming more and more American in it's "Suing Culture" less and less people will be willing to put themselves in the line of fire if they happen to do the wrong thing whilst doing their best to save someones life!

It's a bit like this Hands-Only CPR crap they're pedalling atm, it's not to make it easier or more encouraging to undertake but due to the number of instances where victims and companies havew been sued due to the giver ending up with cold-sores, ulcers and (i kid you not) Herpes...

Erm, it's not you know, they've proven that so long as the air way is clear a breath of life makes very little difference, and when compared to stopping compressions long enough to do the breath it makes no difference at all in adults. That's the crap the BMA is pedalling anyways.

We do still have a good catch all law in this country that if someone is really in the shit and you try to help, even if your help kills them, so long as it was done with the best of your knowledge (ie even if you don't use the latest methods) then you can not be prosecuted.

They dropped the C its now DRAB. Then there's the 3 P's and FAST and SHAPED FISH and SEEP and AVPU and SCALD....and.......and!!

You end up remembering them but not what the fuck they mean.
The 2 guys we had were fire service personnel and very good, no legal bulshit, just get on with it and actually save someone.
CPR is now 30 compressions at 120 /min (fast) then 2 rescue breaths. All kits now have face shields.
We used to have 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Now we have superficial, intermediate and full thickness....or should that be SIF?

Funny bit was. He was explaining the best way to find the right spot for CPR compressions and said line your middle finger up with the nipples (on the male dummy) Gill, my colleague and in her 50's says to him "depends on the age of the woman" which being the only woman on the course, caused some merryment 8)

I finally got round to first aid training last year. A H+S meeting about 4 years previously had recommended that I do it. This sort of delay would be seen as long normally but I work for a college so did it on site :?

I've not been around anywhere much lately.. Interweb time has been very limited, and will be for the next few weeks, I'm pretty much living at work!
