Me, if I had the money I would love to "cooperise" an AD016, preferably a two door in tartan red. Not really bothered about what body shell it starts off with. My first car was a Diamond White 4 door Austin Mk2. I learned to arc weld on the rear subframe. I too used to dick about with cars.

Well that was just the point wasn't it. You could fuck about with them. They were simple and you coul get something that would have been dead to most people and get it running again. It was the sense of achievement that spurred you on and it was fun.and cost very little
It was the same with old bikes.
Nowadays everything is electronic and computer controlled so even if you find something cheap enough to play with you need a degree in computer science which rather takes the edge of the fun bit .....rather!!!

Here's a thought - I wonder if it would be possible to replace the alcohol filled hydro suspension on an AD016 with standard springs & shocks.
I gather parts are becoming harder to find and it might make for a more fun handling motor if you could stiffen it up a bit

I suppose the alternative would be to look for an A40 instead...

Now to my mind that would make the AD016 a much more usable classic. The hydralastic set up is sublime to ride in, but not great to maintain these days.

Has anyone ever taken the crappy hydra-gas units from a Leyland car, (all-agro, princess, ambastardor) put proper Citroen suspension in?

my mum had a lovely blue mini shitty ,they went away for a week in there mk1 cavalier so I put cosmic alloys, a wood and pickett dash and black nudgebars plus a black vinyl roof on it, it looked the fucking mutts dangly bits.

they were so impressed they let me get alloys for the cav and I put a vinyl roof and sunroof on that as well

nooooooooo! Of all the shite I own, and let face it, there's a LOT of it, I will never part with the bus, or the FG. They will remain mine until I snuff it.

Even if I get a mini with the hydrolastic setup, it wont be keeping it!
As it goes, a clubman could be on the cards after all...

I aspired to a clubman once. I bought a van in 1967 £395 (new) It was all I could afford with a mortgage and two pan lids.
Over the next 3 years I fitted a rear seat conversion, side windows and a Clubman grille and surround.

Next best thing I suppose.

They had even less rust protection than the cars, the battery was stuck at the side behind the driver and the cable unbelievably was taken under the vehicle, to the starter. With the current flow and creepage of the white stuff from the battery, it managed to produce a hole about 3" dia in the floor within 18 months.
After welding patches I re routed the cable inside, taking it through the bulkhead with a proper rubber grommet, like it should have been in the first place.
Same thing used to happen to the boot floor in the cars.
Oh, and the grill was a full panel pressing so you couldn't get at the dizzy properly. That was my main reason for fitting the clubman grille TBH. It allowed me to cut the original away. you couldn't even fit the rubber glove to the dizzy cap and cables before.

I had the Ducellier set up on my red one and it used to gobble points like you would not believe.
I got a dab hand at changing them at the side of the road and had quick release pins fitted to the grille to help with this.
Still a barrel of laughs to drive.
After a weekend of dipping in and out of Autotrader and C&C I has decided on not a mini or AD016 but a SWB Series 3 Landy, or more preferably if I can find a not totally shagged out one for less than £3K a defender SWB SW.

I always dream of "finding" a moggy minor woody and doing that up from scratch, but adding all the bitz that have been produced for it. Like strengthened btm steering joints etc.
I know one guy fitted a 1725 O series!!!!

Well lets face it, there is loads of room in there to fit just about anything. I've seen a few V8 versions but the inner wings were butchered and a chopped Jag front axle stuck in One I saw had a BM - M3 back end

not sure what the front end set up is, but the back axle is the mighty Jag IRS.
