The smoke is escaping into other smoke

Guys, I got issues of an electrical nature, of which I'm crap.
Old red car has developed an irritating habit of putting the side and tail lights on dimly when the ignition is on. Doesn't do it on accessory position, only at glow plug / run.
If you pull fuse 13 the lights go out. Engine running or not.
If you have the engine running with the side lights switched on (on the switch that is) and turn the key to off, or even take the fucker out, the engine will continue to run until you turn the lights off, the it'll stop in the usual way.
So, I think I've worked out that I have a live feed from the side lights interacting with the live feed to the stop solonoid?
It seems from the wiring diagram that the stop solonoid is not fused?
Any ideas where to look? I'm assuming it has to be where the loom passes through the bulkhead as I can't see where else the wiring for the side lights might be anywhere near the stop solonoid wire?

Fucked if I know, but my guess would be a shitty earth and the solenoid circuit is earthing though the lights or vice versa.

Try fixorating the under bonnet earth points and the dash earth point.

can't be an earth, it has to be feeding through the live side of both circuits, the stop solonoid earths through the engine...

Sounds to me like a fault in the ignition switch.

Perhaps worth disconnecting the ignition and "hotwiring" via the connectors [chin]

Can't think of any other way the 2 circuits can interact.

I can't either, but even bypassing the ign. switch it's behaving the same way.
I've noticed that if I flick the light switch on and off a few times the side lights will go out and stay off seemingly indefinitely.
I get the impression the live feed wire to the stop solonoid has maybe rubbed through the side light feed wire. I can't see any other way it could be doing what it's doing, but I don't know where the wire disappears to after it passes the bulkhead. I simply cannot find it. GAH!!!

 As you are well aware this is out of my comfort zone.

However, I had a similar fault but also included non working rear wash wipe so may be different.
The fault turned out to be a short under the rear seat squab where the multi cored loom had been trapped.
Worth a look.

it turned out that the relay on the bulkhead had filled with water, rotted out and caused all manner of weirdness. I have no idea what the relay does, but it's live, and with it replaced all is well.

it's a bitch for sure. Weirdly, both sides of the relay are live, ignition switched and seemingly don't do anything....
