Quick Bug

Post by stu » 24 Oct 2007

I took the car to work this morning, which includes a blat along the A27 (not a motorway, but a dual carriageway with 70 limit). For the whole stretch I was behind a D-plate (1966?) VW Beetle; and I was having to really work the XM to keep up with it (up to bursts of *cough*90*cough*).

He came off at the junction before mine so I was able to get a good look and apart from what looked like alloy wheels it seemed completely standard from the outside. There must have been something special under the bonnet(boot?) though.

I like Q-cars. It appealed a lot!
Cheers,
Stu

That stretch of the A27 is *seriously* steep. The red BX 19RD Auto, my girlfriend's Xsara 1.4 and the ZX 1.4 can hold 70 up it as long as nothing gets in the way; then they have to drop back and don't accelerate no more.

I was pleased that the XM was accelerating up it, but slightly less pleased that the Beetle was getting away!
Cheers,
Stu

In all seriousness, I was seriously shafted by a VW van once...admitedly, he got the timing better in and out of the roundabouts but i felt utterly shafted. Then again, I had the kids on board so wasn't 100% but he did give me a good seeing to...you never know whats under the 'hood and good on him too!

I know. Despite a massive run up I only managed 30-35mph up it last night.

Mind you, I was hauling a 600kg trailer with a 1000kg BX on it. I also had a 200kg BX16 engine/gearbox in the van and various other bits and pieces that easily added up to another 150-200kg. Plus I'm another 100kg.... and the van weighs about 1700kg. It's also as aerodynamic as a block of flats.

All on 75bhp. Well, 75bhp at the flywheel. Maybe about 60 at the wheels 15bhp/tonne definitely not FTW.

Did manage 28mpg though.

I know a guy with a Porsche flat 6 in a Type 2, cant see any reason why the same couldn't be shoe-horned into a Beetle?

David, you know your van deserves a CX Turbo petrol engine!

Erm, I don't like Beetles but one of my 'lame to fames' is that an old acquaintence of mine owns a VW specialist place about 8 miles from here and they built the fastest Beetle in Britain, which oddly enough belongs to a feall about 300 yards from where I live. It looked a bit crap and I told him so. Then I saw it in action one day and was fucking gob smacked. Fuck me that thing is quick.

12 mpg? maybe 8? 5 if you boot it all the time?

That would give me a range of barely over 100 miles on a tank! (as it is, 400 miles on a tank is bad enough.)

What it needs is a CX DTR turbo 2 engine.....

Well yeah, but you'd be the fastest van driver in the west my friend!

One day I shall do this, when I get a C25 like...

Or I'll do it in a H van!
