Dashboard lights
I got a problem with the oil pressure, and low water warning lights....they don't fucking work!
They have always been a bit hit & miss, but the other night they came on, before starting the car, then faded out, and never came back. The connectors on ther expansion tank, and on the oil pressure switch are sound, so should I now look at the dash itself?
On the plus side, while looking to sort out this problem, I found a connector which wasn't attached to anything, so I looked some more and found the other end, and I now have the electric dipstick working for the first time since I've had the car!

I've seen those bad boys in action!!
Smiffy, the level guage is usually wank anyway...
Suspect you'll find the oil pressure switch has failed, the temp light self tests through the same circuit, so if the oil pressure light fails then the water temp will also.

Water LEVEL, not water TEMP! You may remember that the temp light was disabled when the dash was modified with a gauge instead.... you were there when you did it!!docchevron132 wrote:Suspect you'll find the oil pressure switch has failed, the temp light self tests through the same circuit, so if the oil pressure light fails then the water temp will also.
Is there an oil pressure switch on any of the scrap engines at the farm?
Come to think of it, how difficult would it be to fit a 2 stage gauge like on the 16v? (obviously I know that either you'd have to do away with the pressure light, or get an adaptor) I have a pressure sender sat on top of my fridge, which I know works, and there are others on the ZX's.

Re: Dashboard lights
The pressure/level gauge isn't too hard to fit - you just need to run an extra wire through the bulkhead. Although as you say you could do away with the light and use that wire instead, I would be inclined to have both, as a number of bulbs use the oil pressure switch as a bulb test before you start.
You'll need a T piece, which I got from a hydraulics supplier (sorry, can't remember the thread size) and connect the extra wire to pin 2 of the 10(?) way top right connector on the back of the instrument panel with the dials facing towards you.

Erm, no, but I've done a lot of them!smiffy wrote: Water LEVEL, not water TEMP! You may remember that the temp light was disabled when the dash was modified with a gauge instead.... you were there when you did it!!
Same difference though, ALL the warning lights self test via the diodes that are actuated by the oil pressure switch.
yes, many.JDizzle wrote:Is there an oil pressure switch on any of the scrap engines at the farm?
Piece of piss, look at Phoenix, copy that, jobbed. a few minutes work really.JDizzle wrote:Come to think of it, how difficult would it be to fit a 2 stage gauge like on the 16v? Which is why I still haven't been arsed to do the same on the TD, although I dont have any spare oil pressure guages anymore so meh..
All you'll need is a T piece adapter as Mat says.

Re: Dashboard lights
I have (somewhere) at least one oil level/pressure gauge, which I'm unlikely to require, if either of you want it it's yours...

Either Chris or I could make use of that, as we both want to do the same conversion! I think he has the biots to do one of the cars already, so I will have to talk with him first...Keep it someplace safe, as I'm certain one of us will ask you very nicely for it!

I have infact secured a full GTi instrument clock set, so with your very kind offer mate, I could infact mod both cars.

Re: Dashboard lights
Most odd, I went out shopping earlier, and the oil and water lights are working again! I'm still going to put a different switch in it though...

Well, there we are Smiffy, go cross the dudes hand with silver and get thee a guage!
As I said at the begining of the thread, THAT'LL BE YOUR OIL PRESSURE SWITCH THEN.
As it goes, the one on my TD is doing the very same thing at the moment, but alas, I dont care enough to crawl around under it right now, especially since the car is rapidly disappearing under hard water!

Re: Dashboard lights
As it happens, I may well have to pop up home in the next week due to a family bereavement (no, not a close relative) so I might be able to pick it up then. I don't know any details of that yet though...

Alas, the gauges in question are up in Durham, however I will be up there and able to seek them in a couple of weeks.
I could then drop them off with Vanny's lass, pass them onto Phil, or even risk the post
