Leaky Lucas
I may have a problem. David noticed a slight leak from my fuel pump a few weeks ago, and it seems to be getting worse.
Sorry for my imprecision here; David will be able to clarify!
Apparently there is a seal inside the Lucas pump that is prone to failure, and this is what has gone. The seal is no longer readily available, so the only solution is to buy the part with the seal in it - £60 from David's local diesel specialist.
The other solution, which I was really hoping for, was to convert it to a Bosch setup. David has all the parts necessary (and the know-how) except for the pump itself. Vanny was going to have a look at his stock, as he may have one, and David very kindly offered to do the work at the National.
Now, it looks like Vanny won't be at the National... also, my fuel consumption has noticeably dropped- I only got 33 mpg on the last topup. Admittedly, that included a trip through the centre of London though...
So: does anyone have a Bosch pump knocking around that I can buy? Or the part I need for my Lucas one? Or am I going to have to spend £60 on the new part?
Thanks guys!

Oops sorry I didn't read your post properly. Bugger.
Mark.
Also in pedantic english correctness mode, your fuel consumption has increased!

Cant help with a bosch pump I'm afraid dude, dad has just had dibs on the last one I had, which rather irritatingly was on my built up as new 1.9TD that was going in my car... but it's dad so....
However, I think I have a fucked Lucas pump knocking about somewhere. I say fucked but the boost valve is fine, it's the govenor that let go.
If I can find it you are of course most welcome to it, but you'll have to bear with until the weekend cos if I haven't tossed it out it'll be up the farm.

Cheers Doc, you're a legend! Keep it 'til the National - sounds like they're not charging the full £30 for just one night, so I'll be there. Beer tokens or actual beer waiting, as you prefer.

Sorry to hassle you Doc, did you manage to find this under the ruins of your barn at the weekend? I'll order a new one if not. Cheers!docchevron1472 wrote:However, I think I have a fucked Lucas pump knocking about somewhere. I say fucked but the boost valve is fine, it's the govenor that let go.

In short. No, fraid not.
I know I had one, and I'm sure I wouldn't have chucked it, but I'll be buggered if I can find it.
There is a Lucas pump on Dave Mascall's (DLM's) engine at the barn, but I dont know if he would want to break the engine for bits..
If you PM Dave and he says it's ok I'll bring the whole pump..

The seals and spindle are available from a lucas centre i did mine on my TGD after it started leaking you may also need a new top cover as the spindle apeture wears eliptical then you just replace the spindle with two new o rings and jobs a goodun just be carefull not to damage or dislodge the governor spring.

I thought the seal on the boost valve had gone?
Didn't realise it was the throttle spindle..
DTM can get the seal kits so I cant see why they aren't available anymore TBH..

So, Doc, would you be very kind and whip the pump off that engine? Thanks very much!Rather awesomely, DLM wrote:Hi - sorry to hear of your pump problems.
You're very welcome to the pump on that engine, as it's the gearbox I really want out of that combo. I'd concentrate on arrangements to get it first, and anything else later. The pump was from my last car, and was running perfectly well when last used - the car was retired because of rust.
Cheers,

I did write that... and yes, it's nothing to do with the spindle or seal, it's the overfuel device. I've spoken to a few diesel injection places now and they all say that the diaphragm and seal used to be available, but it was a known problem so there's a modified unit now available to fix the problem. For £60, rather than the tenner that the diaphragm and seal was.
Now, if you've got hold of another pump, we can swap the overfuellers over. That would be easy.
Conversion to Bosch would be possible too as I now have a set of injectors, lines and a pump (although the pump is still on an engine in a car at the mo)
But. I won't be in a position to do a complete bosch conversion for a while. Yesterday I managed to put a wood saw through my left index finger and completely bugger it. Thankfully I'm no longer leaking all over the place, but I think it's fair to say I won't be trying to do anything fiddly (like change an injection pump) for a good number of weeks.

I'm still planning to. Definitely in the van now as it has a right-hand handbrake, which means the only thing my left hand has to do is change gear, and it can cope with that.
While we're mentioning all things national. Mark, the plan you had to change the hub on your BX at the national. I got the old one off your old BX front subframe earlier today, and I'm afraid to say the bottom balljoint is duff, and the bearing inner seal is missing. I think you'll be better off changing the bearing in your current hub.
