I've always just given them the bearing number for any bearing I've wanted. Never failed yet.

Hmmmm, the plot thickens.

Original point of thread was rumble from front n/s when cornering round a roundabout.
I changed the n/s drive shaft no change.
Initial investigation (at time of first post) showed wheel bearing ok.
Over time, the wheel bearing did fail with the usual hum-drum as you drove along.
I have today replaced n/s front wheel bearing using a press. The drive-along hum-drum is gone but the rumble when cornering a roundabout persists.
As all this started after I changed the diff, then I'm drawing the conclusion it must be related to the diff.

Either: The ZX diff is slightly different and causes some sort of mechanical interference when cornering (rumble not noticable in opposite cornering direction)

or the ZX speedo drive is different causing similar to above

or the bearing within the diff has gone.

Any thoughts chaps? The poignant question I suppose is why it only happens turning through a sweeping right at low-moderate speed (larger roundabouts taken at say 30 mph produce the same noise as smaller ones taken at 10mph)

Nothing is rubbing. The rumble is mechanical with a throbbing or rythmic 'touch'

Does it make any difference if you are on load or off load?

Buggered bearings and/or meshed gears will make very different noises when they are loaded or unloaded

[chin] [chin] no, don't think so. Seems more dependant on the 'outward' force you'd expect to be exerted to the n/s front wheel. i.e. speed related as opposed to accel/load related

/\ yep, I thought that too..
The ZX speedo drive is different yes, but that would cause a permenant and speed related noise, it would also not do it very long since it would chew it's own arse off in minutes..

Have you tried swopping the tyress front to rear, or even off the other car?

 fucking hobo, I like that.

i haven't tried swapping tyres about no, so I will try that next. But it sounds too mechanical and the tracking is ok.
I checked under it today, had the suspension on low and there is still play in the d/shaft, so that's not getting locked up.
No fouling of hand brake cables
There is some play where the n/s d/shaft goes into the diff housing, which made me think aha! Bearing. But there is similar (if not more) play on a diff and driveshaft setup I have on the garage floor, and there were no similar noises on that one.

You intruige me about the speedo drive Doc, how is it different?

What can happen when you exert on outward force like going round the roundabout??? My only thought on this was lower arm bushes but they are ok :(

Put car in high, jack up offending wheel, measure from ctr to outside of tyre in about 5 or 6 positions
They should all be within > 3 mm. If it is, it's not the tyre, so while it's up in the air, put lever back to normal, put a bar in the suspenders and press down. Then do the physical check again. 12 and 6 o'clock then 9 and 3.
If still no joy put in low and repeat previous. If all OK, make an appointment with a hearing specialist :)

Height control...., err Low, Normal and High.

Put a bar between the lower suspenders swivel joint and the body and push down.
Hold wheel top and btm feel for movement by rocking it back and forwards. Transfer hands to each side of the tyre. feel for movement again.
Drop suspenders into LOW and repeat the above.

A further thought. Whilst holding the wheel side to side, try pushing it away from you and pulling it toward you with both hands at the same time. If there is no movement anywhere there's nowt wrong with it mate, so get your ears checked :P

Nope, still don't get what you mean!

What am I testing for? Lower b/j is ok.
Wheel bearing is ok
Bushes I 'think' are ok but need to check
two previously good d/shafts exhibit same 'fault'

I promise you it's not my ears, Mrs Bandit hears it and Charlie has too. Interestingly, I'm pretty sure it's not the degree of steering that makes the noise, but the force applied. i.e. take a motorway sized roundabout and it'll make the same noise on say 1/6 lock at 30 mph as it does on 1/2 lock at 15 mph.

Every ounce of me would say wheel bearing, but it just ain't.

God damn stoopid cars...........

What I said covers more or less everything at the front end but I've heard noises before at different height settings.

Just a thought. I never had the inner end of the drive shaft out on any of my BX's. Is it a straight spline, or a tripode thingy like my picasso?

[chin] I doubt it's anything at that end then. They were always fine.

I think they brought the tripode in so you would have something to fix and take apart every time you have to change the inner boot. :x
